I think being "on call" is a sign you're not doing engineering in your role, but that's not absolute and kind of a deeper discussion about what "software engineering" even means.

"durability" isn't voodoo. Consider if dpkg updates libc.so and then you yank the power cord before the page cache is flushed to disk, or you're on a laptop and the battery dies.

This thinking is a memetic poison created by the exact people that need to be shamed out of the public discourse. I used to agree with it, but seeing how it's been coopted by the bigots, I reject the premise entirely. No one is calling

What exactly do you find "snide" or "sarcastic?" The thesis of TFA is that their faith motivated the crimes. You can't tell the story without talking about how they choose to practice their faith.

I've seen this trick used around, where it really shines is when you want to prepare/commit a range of the ring buffer when interfacing with something that wants a contiguous chunk as an arg, using the mmap hack lets you pass any

I have a small gripe that I think exemplifies a bigger problem. actions/upload-artifact strips executable permissions from binaries (1). The fact they fucked this up in the first place, and six years later haven't fixed it, gives

It's funny how you say this is the textbook scenario ideal for DSLs and I see it as the textbook scenario ideal for a real programming language. Organizing stages as a DAG with "transition ruled by a set of rules" is bonkers,

Go stacks are still growable, no? And hence the "kinda" in async Rust. While boxed futures can be thought of as a segmented stack the literal callstack is not, which can still give you a stack overflow with a bunch of nested poll(

Go does this, as do most runtimes with stackful coroutines. Async Rust (kinda) does this where the async call stack is naturally segmented (although this doesn't get away from stack overflows in some cases because the polling call st

There's no meaningful order to shared dependencies or cyclic dependencies. You can pick one, but making it undefined is a lot more useful as the language implementer. As a language user, don't rely on order for your side effects.
