I've never tried it, but in Windows you can have CUDA apps fall back to system ram when GPU vram is exhausted. You could slap 128gb in your rig with a 4070. I'm sure performance falls off a cliff, but if it's the difference

I’ve been using Krita for a year or so now. At first I found the UI very confusing, but after learning the top bar is just as important as the side bar it really works. YouTube videos of pros using it will blow your mind. It’s really powerf

I tracked down another source which has a much better image: the frog on a coin, giving a sense of scale. Very neat, absolutely tiny. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240220-worlds-tiniest-f...

Not who you asked, but Asus was in the news last year for overvolting the CPUs on their AM5 boards killing both the CPU and motherboard itself.

I have a sample size of one, so I really couldn't say. Problems with long boot times, Expo causing BSOD, context restore not working etc appear very widespread on the AM5 platform by what I'm seeing online. Are you on AM5? My ki

This fall I bought a 7700X with an MSI motherboard through a Microcenter bundle. The board came out in late 2022 and the firmware is still atrocious. I found a single release from August last year that is actually stable, anything newer c

There's definitely a trend of FOSS products and older trivially priced products being bought up by companies that re-release in subscription models. So frustrating. I always get recommendations on the Play Store for World of Goo, an a

This is how it works in my town. My elementary school kids start at 7:20, but I checked their future high school and they start at 8:15. Logistically it makes sense-- high school kids can get themselves to school even if their parents have

I drop my two elementary school kids off before the 7:20 bell every morning. We're too close for school bus service, but I checked the schedule and the first stops begin before 6:45.

I had to pay $800 for an ambulance my son never actually rode, that someone else called. They administered a band-aide to his forehead.

This is great news. My kids are both dual citizens of the US and Japan, born here. I know when they turn 20 they'd pick the US if forced to and that has long stressed me out. They'd be giving up so much and would probably regre

I always assumed fiber either worked or didn't, but that's not the case. My connection would drop several times a day and be down for around two minutes before the fiber gateway rebooted itself to correct the problem. I had coun

I do have a pretty deep table at around 33 inches, but my secret is that I use a lapdesk for my keyboard & mouse. I set the whole thing on an ottoman I have under the table for my feet when I'm done. It's super comfortable an

This will unavoidably sound like one-upmanship, but I've been using a 43" 4K screen in my home office for probably five or six years now. I'm on my second panel. The first one was a Hisense TV and the new one is an Aorus mo

I'd recommend looking into the 5G home internet services all the major cell carriers offer. They're all cheaper than I was paying Spectrum for their minimum tier. None are offered at my address unfortunately but being in Seattle

This summer I bought two Intel 2TB nvme drives for $65 each. Not the newest tech but I've also never had a problem with an Intel SSD. I still have my original 40GB from 2012 in an old laptop and it works just like new. The company th

I have an Optiplex with an i7-2600 and 1050 Ti in the basement. We use it to Parsec games onto my wife's laptop when she (rarely) gets the itch to join in with our boys playing games. Was the 9700K -> 7700X upgrade a nice jump? I&

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way buying a 9th gen Intel chip and having literally zero upgrade path on the same board. My plan is to get the 7700X bundle, which for $400 with board and 32GB DDR5 is a steal, then when AM5 is replaced
