The quote is about a pair of university courses. Students, and probably just people in general, are really bad at knowing what they have learned.

Frustratingly, Donald Knuth still uses the bitmap versions; see any of the TAOCP fascicles. I don't mind the appearance that much, but OS X does a terrible job handling files with bitmap fonts.

This is likely heresy, but the virgin birth is not really central to Christianity. It ties the events of the NT with certain readings of the OT as prophecy. It's part of the Nicene creed, although not the original version. OTOH, sho

Two spaces is a sensible convention for distinguishing inter-word spaces from inter-sentence spaces. If it's being typeset then the spacing can be adjusted then. It's also not true that this is just a convention left over from ty

You could motorize it so it moves maybe half a desk width per day in the absence of any other movement. Just put a rubbish bin on the downstream end.

For what it's worth, the installer app contains a .pkg for the JRE that you can install by the normal methods. OTOH, the Flash installer used to contain a normal package, but no longer does.

This paper has 7 explicit examples of the universality phenomenon, including the bus scheduling. http://arxiv.org/abs/math-ph/0603038 It's moderately technical, but really interesting.

I don't know of the legal status, but I believe the GPL originated when Stallman and others wanted access to the source code for the drivers of a printer. Anyone who uses the software, which is anyone who uses the hardware, should hav

Oded Schramm died in 2008 on solo climb in Washington State. Really should have won a Fields medal for his work on SLE (Schramm-Loewner evolution), as his collaborator Wendelin Werner received.

There are a series of math texts called Beast Academy that are comic book format. There is a lot of enthusiasm for them on some homeschool forums, so those might be places to try to drum up interest.

I think one big plus for LaTeX is its slowly changing nature. Word was appalling 15-20 years ago for writing technical papers. If you gave up then and learned TeX/LaTeX, you're most likely over the learning hump by now and have

The keyboard part definitely doesn't make sense. The Macbook air 11 inch I'm typing on has 7/16" of flat part on both sides of the keyboard, so trimming the width by 1/4" would require no rearrangement at all.
