This is maybe a weird corner case, but I had no luck with the RealMedia files here: https://chance.dartmouth.edu/ChanceLecture/AudioVideo.html on a Mac, particularly the Susan Holmes lecture on "Probability by Sur

Try 'XXX'. Definitely too much variation with what should be the same glyph. It doesn't seem to know about ampersands either.

This reminded me of typing in a program to play a reggae version of "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer" from Family Computing. It was not the coolest magazine, but it was what my school library subscribed to. A search reveals it ap

As a teacher, I totally agree. Understanding something when the teacher presents material is not at all the same thing as digging in and trying some problems yourself.

I never think of POPCNT because it's not a language primitive in any languages I use. I would do it by storing the product of the counts; divide by the outgoing count before decrementing, multiply by the incoming count after incrementi

That's what he said, more or less: "The problem comes not from the language JavaScript, but from the fact that browsers, by default, ..." I think it's the cultural issues he's getting at. Minified or otherwise obfu

If you look at just the first 5 dice and compute the probability that player one rolls lowest, of the 6^4 combinations of rolls the other players can make: 1 beats all 6^4; 16 beats 4^4, 17 beats 4^4, 32 beats 2^4, 33 beats 2^4, and 48 beat

I see how that could happen, and probably has. But, for example, I can also see how the top x black applicants to Harvard would be capable of doing very well at Harvard even if those applicants are not in the top 4.6% of SAT scorers who ap

Standardized test scores are correlated with race, but schools want to admit a more diverse set of students. If they consider test scores and still try for more diversity, it looks a lot like discrimination against groups with high scorers

The iPad with pencil is really useful for marking up student papers. I bought one during Covid when everything was being turned in online, but some students still prefer to turn in scans rather than paper. The downside is that Apple doesn&

That's a very uncharitable reading. "Works in China" in an Internet context would have to include something about having government approval and being subject to government control.

Chevy Spark supposedly starts at $13600, available inventory seems to start at $14595 + tax, title license and fees. I have never bought a new car so I don't know the + part, but that's got to be getting close to $20k.

For me it's a holdover from a high school typing class, but I find it useful. I mostly write in LaTeX which just ignores the extras. On the iphone, two spaces are replaced by a period and a space, which is quite handy.
