This feels like a lot of decisions of Musk w.r.t. Twitter have been, impulsive and hastily implemented.

Given that a lot of non-niche modern languages disagree with you and you provide no rationale, I remain unconvinced. Swift, Kotlin, Javascript/Typescript along with some older languages (PHP, C#, probably more) have special null-handli

NULL/missing is so common that it makes sense to provide special language support, even if you don't have full unions. See e.g. Kotlin and Typescript. What doesn't make sense is to treat a nullable type the same as non-nullab

This isn't security through obscurity at all, the links contain a random secret and aren't public. You might as well say a password is security through obscurity because it can be guessed...

It's not uncommon to provide a way how to do it in standards because it will happen whether you want it or not. See e.g. HTTP headers starting with X- or MIME types in application/vnd.

I do feel 74 bits per second is enough though. That would require 2^(74/2) = 137 billion UUIDs generated in a single second for a 50% chance of a single collision.

Lucky for you, they also define UUIDv8 as a free-for-all where you can do whatever you want, and nanosecond precision is one of the examples given in the RFC.

I feel like v7 is almost a strictly better v4. Assuming you can generate a v7 (you have a time source), what are the disadvantages?
374.
▲
by

When you sort them they will be ordered by generation time. This is useful in UIs, and greatly improves performance in databases (how much depends on DB and use case).

Only v6 and v7, v8 is "whatever you want".

v7 looks nicer since it solves v4's locality issue and you're still a gazillion times more likely to win the lottery than generate a collision.

Which is another weird thing. US declared the space race "won" when they got to the moon, despite being behind in all other milestones like sattelite and manned space flight. If SU got to the moon first US would've ignored it

iPhone has like a 33% market share so I wouldn't call it common if you can't reach 2 out of 3 people on it at least. In contrast, in many European countries Whatsapp has 90%+ penetration [1]. Even where it's relatively unused

SMS is cheap now but wasn't universally when Whatsapp gained critical mass. Nowadays it's mostly about convenience and features compared to SMS, and iPhone has a much smaller marker share in Europe so iMessage isn't a thing.

In the Netherlands all the big bike brands are doing a lot of E-bikes, and there's a gazillion small competitors who do cheap bikes with mostly off-the-shelf components. The bigger brands include Gazelle, Giant, Batavus and Sparta.

afaik the person you replied to is wrong, using System.arrayCopy would definitely make a copy and not be optimized away. Maybe poster meant only copying the reference with `char[] copy = original` which indeed does nothing, but that's
