It's probably a marketing thing, since people with PhD's aren't usually the entrepreneur-type.

My wild guess is they're going after the enterprise market. Dropbox would need to expand in some big ways to provide a secure "all-cloud" filesystem that enterprises could use to replace their own data centers with.

As the article only touched on, this is precisely why the next computing giant will not come from Silicon Valley or anywhere in the US. The current software patent situation has ensured it.

How well is it going to be received compared with the level of effort required? ChromeOS is pretty bad and Google has been working on it for a long time.

I think Google's strategy for ChomeOS is all wrong. Nobody wants low powered laptops without a proper OS. As soon as the iPad blew up the netbook market Google should have retargeted ChomeOS as a tablet OS. A lightweight (zero-weight) OS

Well I didn't intend to write an essay proving something's that's fairly obvious. I think Google's intentions look harmless on the surface, but there may be some sinister consequences if they continue down this road. And at the very least

Welcome to what I call Google's vision of an "Orwellian Computing Age". Your every action & communication will be monitored, and your entire digital identity can be deleted by a centralized, seemingly autonomous authority. Better comp

Yes exactly. In a more broad sense I think all nouns (people, places, urls), should not count against the limit.

Twitter's self imposed 140 char limit has limited their options in a lot of ways. Twitter should have dropped that a long time ago. Or at least not count hashtags, geotags, or urls against the 140 limit. This would've opened a lot doors

This won't work for programmers. Like MP3's, open source has trained almost all programmers to expect all code to be free, all the time, and come with free support.

I'm so utterly disgusted by the whole patent system I care not to read any further. Basically every software patent that starts off with "a method of..." is usually bogus. The whole system needs to be scrapped.
