In the past, white, refined bread might mean keeping your teeth intact. Sifted flour meant no sand or gravel that could crack them.

Absolutely, John Wick stands out. Though I think he started out villainous in the backstory.

Popular culture can help us out. When the villain has a 'personal pet', as opposed to a shark tank or alligators, it's generally a cat. Though sometimes dogs, either a Doberman or German shepherd. So, relatively big dogs. I d

At least the US founding fathers had the foresight to put in the emoluments clause: "...no Person holding any Office...shall...accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign S

Perhaps Canada itself will hot experience starvation, but an overall fall in calories (and nutrients) produced will put pressure on world food prices.

To address your question, the point is for you to click on the link :). Otherwise, I think that the fall in work motivation is definitely connected to inflation. First, the money you make is worth less, so it seems pointless. Second, you se

I recall that in the wake of the end of the Cold War, the US began hiring former Soviet nuclear/bio/chem weapons experts to prevent them from selling their services to various regimes. This could be a good time for govt and milita

I know people who are very hand-wavy about technical development or engineering. They think everything just appears from thin air, like a cartoon genie. When I debunk that with details of even the simplest code, they respond "soon AI w

I think so, given a healthy market. Sometimes fiat decisions or policies can discourage or outright prevent local supply from developing. The key is balance.

Absolutely, that's why it's a silver lining in a very dark cloud. Ordinary folks (myself included) suffer greatly in inflation. The only real beneficiaries are exporters of locally produced goods or services

Quite right, imports get more expensive. I guess it's only beneficial if you have most of the supply chain in-country.

A weaker currency is better for exports. So Italy can export cars, or olive oil, and the foreign currency it receives will buy more euros for paying employees, local suppliers, etc.

The silver lining is that a weaker currency means EU exports are more competitive.

Total energy consumption or just electricity? Because electricity is itself only a third of total energy use in, say, Germany. So a third of 45 percent is 15 percent. Good, but doesn't save the day. Also, is that steady throughout the

The problem with nuclear right now is that even if we decide to massively increase the share of nuclear power in the energy mix (in itself a very good idea), it will take a lot of time to build up the human technical capital necessary to pl

Absolutely. No amount of lipstick can transform a pig into a prince[ss], but sadly GIGO still holds and the trash in the ether distracts and stupefies. That is, you can make a potentially smart person into a dumb one.
