Capitalism is an economic system. It says nothing about social services or policy. There are plenty of countries with free market economies which provide extensive social services and have very progressive social policies (see northern euro

Ditto Chicago. The fact that every homeless person in the country does not save up the $50-$100 (less than a week's work in a major city) in bus fare and make a beeline for Miami or San Francisco has some scary implications about the depths

Personally I appreciate the client-server design and the memory savings it lends when connecting multiple terminals to the same tmux session: http://www.linuxized.com/2010/05/switching-from-gnu-screen-t... Plus the more liberal BSD licens

I think asking why Silicon Valley almost completely ignores the midwest when there is engineering talent here in spades (I'm in Chicago and we have the population and the top flight engineering schools to, I believe, merit some attention) i

I switched from the iphone to android and I agree with your assessment. Android's UX is good, iPhone's is great. I have high hopes for Android 3.0 (Gingerbread, due in Q4) which is allegedly going to be a major UI revamp. In the mean time I

Is the voice recognition better than what google voice offers in its transcription service? Because I've found that to be horribly inaccurate.

I agree but a lot of people (myself included) thought Google was large, rich, smart, respected and brazen enough to fight this fight so we were all thrilled when they dropped the gauntlet against the carriers. At this point I'm just dying t

That is frightening logic and factually incorrect. History is full of examples of minority abuse at the hands of the majority. Here is a good starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_democracy#Oppressi...

They ceded the wireless world to the control of the carriers so it wouldn't be a stall so much as playing dead. And a full reversal is certainly possible, it would imply a short-sightedness which is hard to reconcile with Google's policy hi

Principles which succumb to "political realities" or the "spirit of compromise" are no principles at all. I'm still hugely disappointed but maybe it was naive to think a corporate entity could ever have true principles.

Oh I agree and it's my reaction too, "yeah but what problem are they solving? how are they doing it?" That's the extent of my evaluation. And that's also why I'm not an entrepreneur. :) There's a definite mismatch between the valuation fun

Part of the difficulty is convincing a strongly technical crowd that companies and products live or die for reasons other than technology. Unless they're solving crazy hard problems, a lot of engineering types are just going to be underwhel

I can't think of any Google product which is as frivolous as FB. Maybe buzz and wave (RIP). People would not take down-time in gmail, analytics, calendar, search, maps, et al lightly.

You'll have to forgive some of us for believing that Google was a principled company when it came to fundamental issues such as carrier control of content and services. "Allowing broadband carriers to control what people see and do online

It represents a very real change in position. Everyone thought, naively perhaps, that google was going to liberate the mobile phones of america whether the carriers liked it or not. This then is a non-aggression pact with the carriers showi

I think it's shocking to a lot of people because Google has long claimed that "what's good for the internet is good for [Google]". It was something more concrete than just the nebulous "don't be evil". It stood for support of open-standards
