Sorry, there may not be too many grandmothers reading reddit, but our userbase is very much non-technical.

All of us have. You need to log-in to Weebly to see it (where we show it very prominently). Posterous has it on their home page. Fire up IE6 in a virtual machine and check it out :)

The Digg survey shows that 70% of IE6 users are corporate, but there's no indication how representative that is of the web as a whole. Either way, this initiative is targeted straight at those users. We've heard from several sources that ma

There's only so much space to design a widget that works for 640x480 resolution. We're already recommending 4 browsers, many others didn't make the cut (Opera, Konqueror, Flock, etc)

Couldn't they install Firefox, then, and use IE6 for legacy apps?

Hmm, you're right. Somehow that didn't make it into the final release. What a shame. Either way, our perspective is still that the more people that complain about IE 6, the more pressure IT departments will have to upgrade their systems. St

That's what we figure -- the more complaints coming through the door, the more pressure will be put on the IT department to upgrade.

Again, same reply: "That's not an excuse. IE 8 comes with a "compatibility mode" feature where any site can choose to use the IE 6 rendering engine by setting headers or meta tags appropriately."

Our perspective is that the more people that are prompted about their outdated browsing experience, the more pressure the IT department will be getting to get their ass in gear and upgrade their decade old computer systems. You can bet that

From my comment on VB: "That's exactly the idea. Even if a bunch of the remaining IE 6 users are corporate, hopefully a few of them will become aware of the fact that their browser is almost 9 years old and start putting pressure on IT to u

So the particular crash issues we were having were not your typical MySQL crashes (which, as you correctly point out, are usually hardware-related), they were definitely software-related with ndb. Which is obviously a huge problem, especial

Last time I used the MySQL ndb cluster (admittedly, quite a few years ago, so things may be different now), it was a huge fail. It was extremely temperamental, very difficult to configure (the documentation wasn't particularly helpful in th

To fight against that -- maybe you could make the total number of votes an application has gotten (it's score) invisible to the people doing the voting?

Do you know for sure that the iPhone doesn't support OTA updates, or are you just guessing based on the fact that Apple hasn't done one yet?

I imagine it would be whatever the capacity of the network before melting down is. If it consecutively gets sent to the entire address book, and there are a lot of iPhones out there, that is some fast exponential growth.

What about your data? Most web applications have persistent data of some sort that is vital to the user experience -- without it, you don't have much of a site. [Edit: And keeping a hot copy of that data is a lot harder than it sounds]
