Sure, but I think what the poster is trying to get at is.. why couldn't you make a configuration using the NUC's that was more than a demo environment? I don't see any reason you couldn't as long as your infrastructure d

Mostly agree, although in this case I say mostly because the colo facilities where you can easily rent a single unit of space are far and few between these days. If we were still in an environment where there were tons of hosts like Verio s

Apparently it's pretty natural for these small animals to run such long distances. My wife has a hamster and they are known to run at least 9km a night. We had to find it a different room to live in because it will be up ALL night runn

I prefer using Symmetric Encryption: https://github.com/reidmorrison/symmetric-encryption It's super simple to setup and maintain. The only pain-point is how to distribute the private key to new-users. Haven'

Chef supports encrypted data-buckets where you decrypt only on the server. Puppet supports hiera data with encryption as well (via plugins). There's no reason anyone should be storing password information in source, especially API keys

I think the issue is less with the number of tweets per second (not very impressive as you suggest), and instead the requirement that those same 6000 tweets fan out to all of the various feeds/locations that they need to show up at and

Last I heard btrfs was still not considered a stable main production filesystem. Has this changed recently? Even just late last year I had not heard of production 'success' stories on it. Unless something has majorly changed, the

Well, simply enough, it's kind of a difficult problem to solve. The way most rails apps do it, is deployment with Capistrano or similar. There's also Fabric which can interface pretty well with rails deployment as well. Honestly t

I'd say the tax portion is actually a huge consideration for many businesses that would be comparing between leasing or buying. If you purchase $100k of hardware or more, that can have a pretty significant tax benefit.

I don't really feel this factors in to this particular talk that much. Not only has Amazon had some VERY high-profile outages (meaning making the national news), but just about every cloud provider has or does have outages of more than

About $5/Mbps here! It seems like you can get some pretty good deals if you find a newish data-center. Internap has been building out like crazy recently and gave us a great deal on bandwidth. I remember the days of potentially hundred

Agreed. The inability to specify a restart delay is just silly. It makes that functionality only useful for OOM type issues where the main process dies unexpectedly. Network transition type problems and you're going to have-a-bad-time.

Not that I can think of. Upstart is slightly simpler than systemd to build configuration files for, but that's also because it doesn't have any advanced features like memory/processor/IO limits or the like. Additionally

If I may, one additional thing that I found which helps a lot with memory issues as relate to MySQL: Use jemalloc or similar. Essentially I brought a system which killed off the MySQL service every few weeks in OOM, to running faster than e

Disagree with the seven figures number. Six figures, sure. Seven is just silly. You can have a lot of gear or servers for mid/low six figures.

I think the issue is not that the exchanges charge too much, or that the prices aren't different between the exchanges (they are, sometimes vastly so from what I've seen). The problem as I would see it, is that you can't extr
