Yeah I have to wonder how great Duolingo would have been if I had it as a kid as a learning tool for French (I'm Canadian). I generally got good French marks, but I think Duolingo would have boosted my actual ability.

The Millionaire Next Door is a good read related to this although it is getting a bid dated.

One thing I think that is good to keep in mind with regards to doing things in the past, is that if there was money to be made, people would find a way to get things done. Certainly in 2015 with computing it is far easier to flexibly accomp

I remember reading an IEEE Spectrum article about death rates over 100, and while obviously very high, apparently they didn't increase much. I can't seem to find it unfortunately as it was a good article.

I wonder if a small part of the dancer/bartender vs engineer situation is that engineers (statistically usually male) often are working mostly with other men. My sister is married to a ballet dancer (who just retired to start studying

Lately everything deep learning seems to get upvoted, even rather mediocre stuff. I like deep learning and certainly think it is interesting but it is getting ridiculous.

That's really not that interesting. I work as a research scientist at a face recognition company. If you want, you can detect faces at any angle, but sometimes for speed you will only check upright faces.
