Fascinating. The old designers were amazingly creative with their limited resources. The decoding logic for the 8087 is… ahem… interesting with how it interacts with the 8086. Amazing that it works at all. Would be interesting to see the ac

I’m sure Zilog did. But they didn’t share it with us. The history here is interesting.

JSON is… adequate. I like binary formats, too, when doing low-level programming, but you often want something readable, and JSON is a lot better and easier to parse than many other things, say XML.

Agreed, though I would say that 6502 is a lot more straightforward to memorize than x86. A lot fewer addressing modes and every instruction is always just a byte, possibly followed by immediate data. The 6502 was a little gem.

You would still have video happening, but it would not be the type we have today (streaming arbitrary full-length movies from a nearly infinite catalog and YouTube). It would be used for big events and things like that. We might still have

Brilliant! I love it. Bonus points for using the eWoz monitor. It’s giving me the itch to build it.

Depends how pervasive OC3 would have gotten. A 1080p video stream is only about 7 Mbps today.

Yea, I’ve thought about getting an M4 refurb or used off EBay once the M5 line comes out completely and Apple stops selling M4s. I have an old x86-based Mac Mini that serves as the family media server and backup server. I’ll need to upgrade

Brilliant! I love the stealing of Forth ideas to power this. Forth’s minimalism is highly underrated.

Yea, that’s what I have been telling myself. The 16 GB of RAM I have on the M1 is starting to be a limiting factor now. If the RAM was upgradable, I would do that and probably keep the M1.

It feels like all of modern society is being reduced to button clicks that produce dopamine hits. And that’s sad. No wonder everything is a mess.

I appreciate your helping to strengthen my resolve. More importantly, my wife thanks you as well. That said, the increased RAM available on the new models is really what I want. I have lots of programs open simultaneously.

How is the QoS communicated to the scheduler? Is there a mark on the binary or does the code do it at thread startup?

For laptops at least, I appreciate not having fans that sound like a helicopter. I guess for Mac Mini and Mac Studio having more fan noise is acceptable (maybe a switch would be nice). One of the things that I love about my Air is there is

Does anyone have any insight into the MacOS scheduler and the algorithm it uses to place threads on E vs. P cores? Is it as simple as noting whether a thread was last suspended blocking on I/O or for a time slice timeout and mapping I&

The issue here is backwards compatibility with web pages that will never be updated. Nobody wants a browser that works with “most of the web.”

As long as the 20% is enough to sustain your company, sure. You might have to charge more, however. Luxury brands do this, for instance (fewer consumers is actually a strategic choice to make the product more exclusive). “Pro” products also
