I don't have to have a friend that is the same as me. Indeed, that would be boring. I just want a friend to at least be able to understand those facets of me, and not judge me for them. Likewise I wouldn't mind befriending an atheist skateb

It means I believe at the very least, a creator was responsible for initial life. I also believe that evolution is either a guided process or that the existing evidence can also point to creation. Do not believe in young earth. Do not belie

Not sure if this leads to trolling, but yes, extremely, on both accounts. I'm both a Christian (even something of a creationist) and manage to love science. I admit it's not a common combination (hence my post), but it does exist. :)

You know, at first I was thinking this is a cheesy idea, especially with it not really giving anything new. But then I think, what would I pay to find a friend that truly has overlapping interests? I'd probably pay decent money for that, be

Absolutely understand. I've been close to there. Definitely read books, and take advantage of the fact you can get a 100% free CS education from MIT in the comfort of your home. I hope I didn't come across too abrasive, I've just seen a lot

I think the number of people who enjoy being siloed experts is many orders of magnitude below what people think it is. I think in the tech community, most hacker types love helping others along. After all, somebody influenced us. I've met m

Openness and innovation are not mutually exclusive. It is possible to both champion standards and have a walled garden.

Yes, it does. I have standards for the people I choose to involve myself with. In a similar vein, I would likely not even befriend anyone that uses it, or anyone that supports this type of application (either directed towards men or women).

I've seen this effect in other "heated" discussions, and I wonder if it's the effect of moderation. Primarily, what happens to a thread as the percentage of moderated messages increases? Is that metric involved in the positioning? I could s

What are you talking about? I see at least a few stories per week on sexism in the top 10. Given that this place is more technology/startup-related than "let's talk about society", that's a pretty good frequency for just one of many valid s

It's a subtle difference, but one probably based on opinion. tptacek doesn't make any claims on the arguments themselves, but rather the placement on HN. So it's not ad hominem, but it is censorship. His claim is more along the lines that o

I think you're only looking from a consumer perspective, not a business perspective. What is my incentive to start a business when it's constantly a race to the bottom? Furthermore, why invest in a business? It'd be stupid to put $1000 in a
