It is definitely refreshing to see some actual evidence in something where arguments tend to be based on speculation, experience, or opinion. Now, we just need someone to research Emacs v. Vim, Tabs v. Spaces, etc.

On ODesk, you can find decent designers willing to work for $15/hour on Bootstrap. It's cheap, and the really good ones can easily do up a custom site in a work week or less, provided you have some existing assets (logo, screenshots, boiler

I think we can safely assume the answer to "how many US citizens" is "all of them". The fact they're not even willing to give a suggestion of magnitude speaks volumes.

Please don't misunderstand my comment for a lack of excitement about this domain. I'm going to keep a close watch on this to see where it goes. Absolutely agree about the state of Bootstrap themes, which is why I tend to go pure custom with

This. I have ~5000 rep, but have pretty much gone to not using at all for the past year, primarily due to shoving questions to ancillary SE sites. I dabble in administration, but not enough to constantly view ServerFault. I'm interested in

For a couple dollars? Probably nothing at all. I've been outsourcing custom bootstrap themes similar to this (perhaps slightly less polished, but completely custom to the product) for around $400-500 for 4-5 different page styles and all el

Definitely beautiful, but the price point seems a bit strange. It definitely surpasses ThemeForest territory, but it's still built on an existing framework and has that "cookie-cutter" vibe to it. Considering a few hundred more bucks will g

FogBugz arrived when the main player on the scene was BugZilla, and capitalized on the fledgling "AJAX" craze. It was definitely a Bugzilla zapper, and it still remains a quality product to this day, gaining features and maintaining simplic

Indeed; and my post was never intended to belittle Joel himself. He has provided great value to the industry in both capacities. I'm mainly challenging the notion that if he truly hires only developers he considers to be rockstars, then why

Well, in the linked article he used a Mozart/Salieri analogy, implying that rock star programmers write masterpieces, not simple bug trackers. If all Fog Creek programmers were truly rock stars, wouldn't they be beating Google instead of wr

Confirmation Bias plays a huge role. It is VERY difficult for the brain to break past what seems to be a societal norm, at least in the modern tech scene. Also, when it's seen as the way to "get things done" programming-wise, then many of t

Forgive potential ignorance here, but people often quote Joel Spolsky as saying things like: "...the trouble with using a lot of mediocre programmers instead of a couple of good ones is that no matter how long they strive, they will still p

After so much work, gotta love the footnote here: "Note: In the hours before our presentation/release, Google pushed a new version of reCAPTCHA which fully nerfs our attack."

The best forms of advertising don't give a user what he is already looking for, they give him what he doesn't know he needs. By manually curating what ads you like, chances are you'll miss stuff that is actually relevant. I'm a developer, b

I love it, particularly the statement "Facebook should stop treating ads like they are dirty things that must be manipulated and integrated unwittingly into the Facebook experience." Totally agree. Pinterest succeeds because it is a form of

The writing here is atrocious. I bogged down in the 3rd paragraph and decided not to continue. Edit: Seriously, count the frequency of sentences that begin with "He", "But", "And". Sometimes parallel structure is not the way to go.
