Yes, I (with a few others) did a similar optimization for FreeBSD's firewall, with similar results but much greater simplicity using what we call "pfil memory pointer hooks" We wrote a paper about it in 2020 for a conference

I come from a very different world (optimizing the FreeBSD kernel for the Netflix CDN, running on bare metal) but performance leaps like this are fascinating to me. One of the things that struck me when reading this with only general knowle

This seems relatively common among ancient hunter-gatherer societies. We've been watching Prof. Jiang's excellent "Story of Civilization" course on his Predictive History YT channel[1]. In the 2nd or 3rd video, he ment

One of the things that makes our wifi suck are HP (and other) printers using wifi direct. Looking at a wifi scan, I can see new fewer than 5 of my neighbors printers screaming to the top of their lungs. The only thing that makes wifi in a

By now you’ve certainly noticed the smell. That is the aroma of Mobil 1 oil being boiled off That sounds so familiar! My first car was a barn-find 22 year old (at the time) 1964 Triumph TR4. It had a moderately bad oil leak, and the oil

Great question.. Me personally? Nothing. I hate them. I never want anybody to touch my screen. However, I've talked to at least one team that has disabled their app on MacOS who thinks having a UI designed for touch-screen run via a

Its SO ANNOYING to have to carry an Apple Silicon macbook AND an ipad. I'd love to see a touchscreen option for macbook and the option to run in ipad mode. But that would probably cannibalize sales. As it is, you can theoretically

NFS was a huge part of my life in the 90s.. - It caused me to switch from Linux to FreeBSD in 1994 when Linux didn't have NFS caching but FreeBSD did & Linus told me "nobody cares about NFS" at the Boston USENIX. I was a

There are benefits to ZFS for spinning drives. Eg, a metadata-only L2 ARC on an NVME drive, with the data coming from a spinning drive would likely perform better than UFS. This is because with UFS, the head has to move around at times to

Correct.... It was an office in a suburban office park.. I remember there were some areas that I was not allowed in. But I don't know if that was for security reasons, or just due to general non-kid safe areas. I don't remember

My Mom was a FORTRAN programmer for a defense contractor from the late 50s to the mid 90s. She spent her career doing things like that F16 simulator. The last thing I remember her talking about was one of the B1 or B2 bombers. When I was

Solaris had a unified page cache, and ARC existed separately, along side of it there as well. One huge problem with ZFS is that there is no zero copy due to the ARC wart. Eg, if you're doing sendfile() from a ZFS filesystem, every b

Alpha died because HP decided that Itanium was the one true processor and killed PA-RISC and Alpha (which it had acquired) in favor of itanic. I'd love to live in a world where Alpha had been free to compete on merit. Who knows, mayb

It didn't help that Itanium was late, slow, and Intel/HP marketing used Itanium to kill off the various RISC CPUs, each of which had very loyal fans. This pissed off a lot of techies at the time. I was a HUGE DEC Alpha fanboy a

Does anybody know if the X2 supports the x86 Total store ordering (TSO) memory ordering model? That's how Apple silicon does such efficient emulation of x86. I'd think that would be even MORE important for a Windows ARM64 l

I have baking recipes from my great-grandmother (circa 1890) that direct the baker to use "a medium fire". They were later annotated in my grandmother's handwriting with temperatures (in Fahrenheit).

In a past life in the mid/late 2000s, I did 10GbE NIC drivers for a small IHV. VMWare was by far the most awful vendor to deal with. They had mandatory certification testing which was required to distribute the driver. Their tests w

It depends on the car. My first car (in 1986) was a barn find 1964 Triumph TR4a. If I had that car today, I'd EV swap it in a heartbeat because - The car is not super rare - The inline 6 it came with is under-powered, un-reliable, and

That's a shame. How hard is it to enable? Do you need a custom kernel, or can you enable it at runtime? On FreeBSD, its been in the kernel / openssl since 13, and has been one runtime toggle (sysctl kern.ipc.tls.enable=1) away f

I guess that explains why the water there tastes so nasty. The only places in the US that I ever seek out bottled water are Las Vegas and Phoenix. The water in both places tastes nasty and often comes out of the tap very warm..

My most frequent flight lands at 11:50pm, and is often 30+ minutes late. The last thing I want is to spend my "down time" at 1am waiting 30+ minutes for my bag in an uncomfortable, loud, jarring space. I'd rather just take

I've often have the opposite experience. I fly a LOT (4+ times per month) and I hear the bag doors close and watch the handlers drive their ramp away while people are still staggering on-board more than 1/2 the time.
