I think it also got wind because it was just so much easier to compile stuff with gcc than it was to use the vendor compilers, with all of their incompatible flags and extensions. This was in the days before package managers, when everybody

I remember being assigned to look into Solaris when working as a volunteer sysadmin in grad school, where we were a SunOS shop. I took a sparcstation, wiped it, and installed Solaris. This was 1992 or so, so it must have been 5.0 or 5.1.

When did it become ubiquitous? I first got root privs via sudo on a *nix system in 1991 or so, and I remember it being widely deployed even then.

I wish they also inclided lmbench style microbenchmarks (time to open files, fork, ipc latency, etc). That was always an area where MacOS lagged behind pretty much everything by factors of 2 or more. The closest thing they have are some co

What functionality remains to make it a viable alternative to MacOS on an M1 13" MBP or MBA? It seems like wifi is the biggest remaining hurdle?

From the article: this translates into vaccine effectiveness estimates against symptomatic Omicron infection of between 0% and 20% after two doses, and between 55% and 80% after a booster dose What I'm wondering is: Is this due to

This is certainly true on the server side where QUIC can be ~4x as expensive as TLS over TCP for some workloads, and I've been wondering how much it matters on the client side. Do you have any data from low-end clients showing either

The article goes into very little detail regarding the client hardware and software. From "No other applications were running on the computer", one can assume it was a laptop or desktop. If you assume that it was a developer

I work on kernel and network performance on FreeBSD. For me the issue with QUIC is that we loose a few decades of optimizations in software and hardware. Eg, we loose TCP TSO and LRO (which reduce trips through the network stack, and thus

In some ways it reminds me of mdb from {open}solaris. https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18752_01/html/816-5041/modules-2... Its nice to have a fast, scriptable debugger. I'm thankful that it (partially)

I spent over 2 weeks in a US hospital in 3 separate stays this fall, and while its not "complete failure", it is pretty close. ER overflowing, nurses with 2x the patient loads of 2019, etc. It is not 100% clear to me if this was

So the breach involved their portal. I HATE those portals. I wish healthcare providers would just send an email, rather than "you have a new message on our portal". I think (hope?) my email is more secure than these portals..

I've had an LG OLED (65" C9) for roughly 2 years, and its the best TV I've owned, hands down. It is amazing for movies and TV, because of its inky blacks. (unliked LED/LCD, the OLED pixels are actually turned off indivi

Do the homebrew apps obey the normal screen saver / burn-in protections? Eg, Netflix on the TV, when paused, will put up a fireworks screen saver very quickly. Will the homebrew youtube app do the same thing?

In that case, you'd just buy a streaming stick or settop box, like a FireTv, AppleTV, Roku, or AndroidTV box.. These are a small-ish percent of the cost of a new TV.
