Except containing hydrogen requires bulky tanks. I was curious, and googled.. It turns out the only hydrogen car I'm aware of that's on sale in the US (Toyota Mirai) weighs several hundred pounds more than the most popular EV in

I don't think that is the problem, just something that kicks in after the problem has happened and wifi has disappeared. Eg, on my macbook, I was loosing wifi every hour before I tweaked the settings on the router.

Quic throws away roughly 40 years of performance optimizations that operating systems and network card vendors have done for TCP. For example (based on the server side) - sendfile() cannot be done with QUIC, since the QUIC stack runs in us

I have seen issues with apple (Mac and iPhone) devices loosing connectivity on wpa2 after each rekey. Symptom is the device drops offline for several seconds, sometimes connecting another network if one is available. This wreaks havoc wit

I guess I'm just biased because I like to run an OS on my desktop (freebsd) that doesn't support Electron. I've carried that over to my macbook... I've just gotten into the habit of "gmail is leftmost, slack is ne

I totally agree with the author's points, however, I can't understand why people run "apps" for things like WhatsApp (and Slack) when they run just fine in a browser tab.

Maybe this has already been answered in a downstream thread, but I think it deserves its own thread... For applications delivered via a 3rd party store, how is Apple going to (a) identify them, and (b) count their installs so that it can c

I used to uninstall food delivery apps when not using them, but found that just killing their ability to notify me was equally effective without the hassle of re-signing in every time I needed to use them.

How much information do app devs get when customers disable app notifications from their app entirely? Some apps (especially food delivery.. doordash, i'm looking at you) have such spammy notifications, I tend to disable notification

we'd be able to run the latest mainline kernel on our devices GPL or no GPL, we're talking about a TV here. I seriously doubt that they have a bootloader that's willing to run unsigned code. So maybe you'd be able to

FreeBSD can read and manipulate EFI variables in general. It would be interesting to see what happens when you try efivar or efibootmgr in FreeBSD. Grab the memstick image from here: https://download.freebsd.org/releases&#x

UEFI allows you to programmatically change the boot device from inside the OS. This is important for failed or degraded SSDs, as they can fail in weird ways (read only, all reads hang, etc) such that trying to boot from them can hang the s

Like the parent, I'm annoyed at just Wifi 6, when 6E is out and 7 is around the corner. However, the feature of 6e (and 7) that I need is the new, larger 6Ghz band for stable performance in a crowded urban environment with hundreds of

Hertz, and most rental car companies were caught flat footed by the pandemic, holding lots of cars and not doing a lot of business. However, the industry seems to have recovered to levels higher than pre-pandemic, which is surprising to me

When it was down for me, I wound up at a cloudflare landing page. I checked, and sure enough, they seem to be behind cloudflare now: news.ycombinator.com is an alias for news.ycombinator.com.cdn.cloudflare.net. Is that a new thing?

I don't know anything about power dishwashers, but I despise the long cycle times of modern clothes washers. I recently stayed in an AirBnB with a new washer & dryer, and the washer had a "speed mode" that provided a 30m

I've live in western NY, OH, NC, VA, FL and the Bay Area. The only place where I've found that a messy parking lot doesn't correspond to a bad neighborhood is in the Bay Area. I'm specifically thinking of the Safeways

A coin deposit is a signal that either the carts are being stolen, or that they are not being returned to the cart corral. Both are signs of a bad neighborhood in my area of the country.

Parking lots full of unreturned shopping carts are a sign of a bad neighborhood in my area of the country. The need to require a quarter deposit implies a lack of trust, and an "FU" to the customer. I return the "FU" by

Do they still require a quarter deposit on shopping carts? One opened in the US city where I lived ~15-20 years ago, and they required a coin deposit to use a shopping cart. I don't cary change (not even back then), and requiring a de

I bought a pair of the xreal air glasses about 6 months ago, with the intention of using them to code. However, the pixel density is so low that text looks seriously janky, and I don't use them for code. My backup use was to hook them

I had the opposite problem. My RFID reading board went bad, and it would claim every filter was past due and would not dispense water or ice.

That's a great excuse, but the motivation is for GE to be able to sell high margin filters due to DRM lock-in. Their filters with RFID tags cost 2x to 3x what compatible filters cost on the open markget.
