This is by far the worst problem with Stack Overflow. The mods seem to leap at the chance to mark questions that are similar, but not identical, as duplicates.

I'm tempted to steal your concept and build a version of this for video games.

Very cool. I made a multiplayer version of Conway's Game of Life a few months ago, and it is fascinating to see how much our versions differ. I dig how you are using "war" as not just a metaphor, but a game concept.

Good idea—I just pushed an update with this functionality.

I pushed an update with "localOnly" mode, which prevents all connections from non-localhost IPs. monitor.io could potentially be used in production now if you telnet in from a shell on the local machine.

Great point. I am working on adding an option for requiring a username/password to make this safe for production. It should be pushed in the next couple days.

From the Tinder clone blog post linked in the first paragraph: The days of natively developing apps in Java and Objective-C have an apparent end in sight. I love Node.js and Javascript. I wish this was true, but I can't bring myself

The point of including WKWebView in the iOS 8 SDK is to make it accessible to non-Safari apps. They must have actually tested this new component. I don't doubt that there is probably an explanation that makes sense, but based on what

This bug, which continues to cripple HTML5 apps on the App Store but not ones accessed in Safari, seems almost too perfect to be unintentional.

The conversation needs clarity, not his post. His post was clear, but completely irrelevant to the conversation. Its claim that the "pro-drug crowds" downvoted him was also hostile and inaccurate. It deserved to be buried.

I don't eat hallucinogenic mushrooms, but I downvoted because you countered someone saying that they should be legalized with an anecdote about your wife encountering a violent opiate addict. Conversations like this require clarity.

That is another good idea. I may implement that as well. The problem I'm focusing on at the moment is that the game is both less challenging and less fun when fewer players are online (if you have any ideas to increase player retention

Nice. I hadn't considered attaching three cells to another player's block. Another tactic that I've seen in the game is to use 1-3 cells to cause other patterns of >10 cells to "self-destruct". This can work dire

It's you! That high score is impressive (even with a bot). I'm not sure if you noticed that others were at one point rallying against you. Someone created a player named "down with CyberShadow".

It's running on a $10/month 1 GB memory/1 CPU droplet on Digital Ocean. Nginx is letting the websockets connections through to Node.js, and I'm assuming Node.js is what would crash first.

Nope, the server crashed and restarted! Some of the local data on your client was out of sync with the server during the restart (at least, that is my best guess).

Author here. The front page of HN is proving to be a great way to stress test this. I'm surprised NginX (serving the static content) and Node.js (all the websockets communication) is handling 50+ players, no problem.
