Same here, but for each one of us there was another who probably said 'screw it' and just put their stuff on github anyway.

The one thing that I like about Github is that everything is public by default and you have to pay to keep your code private. I feel like a positive consequence of that business choice was the opening up of way more software. Gitlab, whil

This is somewhat on topic but people may consider it unrelated. There is a business book that explains the disconnect between many people who say they want to start a business but only focus on the task that they're good at. One of th

The funniest part about this, is that the chain would continue into one of Facebook's products after snap gets it. I come up with a great idea for storytelling --> Snap says "yeah, that's our's now" --> Facebo

Yes. You're programming a person instead of a computer but that's the only difference.

It would be nice if an approach with such a humanitarian tact used in the OP's article were used back then. Hopefully we continue to grow in such a way.

There have been others saying don't quit your day job and to do it on the side. I agree. It may be more stressful and you might lose a bit of sleep but it is far preferable to racing against the emptying of your bank account. I'

In California, that's not the case. As long as it's not a competitor or in a similar space the company should have no claim to your business or ideas generated while not using the companies resources.

Short answer: becoming experts at their craft, building business relationships and filling their coffers. Trying to start a successful business is much easier when you know how to get stuff done, have access to people who can get stuff done

I've found that starting a new problem when my mind was previously focused on finishing a different big project is difficult but doable. First thing is take a 5 or 10 minute break away from the computer to clear your mind a bit. When

Funny how you mentioned nothing of the computing resources required to run any of these. Sometimes it's alright to spend more time creating a product when the end result uses less CPU and less memory. It's not all or nothing.
