The focus on sample size is misplaced: small sample sizes frequently have sufficient power to be statistically significant. The error you are making is in placing too much faith in a single study, and possibly in the journalists/blogge

The design patent in this case doesn't cover the corners of the device, it only covers the face of the device. The patented design of a design patent application are the solid lines---broken lines are used to denote additional context
