I just realised my generation is now old enough to be complaining about younger generations. I think the only "generational" debate worth having these days will be the funding of the pensions (promised to people but not always saved for) an

I would have imagined that someone from QLD would know better.[1] The abuses of the 1970's in QLD are surreal, but they are only a few short decades away; that's to say nothing of One Nation. But, to pause the banana-bashing for a moment, t

It's incredible the sound and fury generated by version numbers. Ubuntu is almost there if they would just drop the rather silly animal names and stick with 10.04, 10.10, 11.4, 11.10 et cetera. Also having such a easy to remember and unique

My first home computer in the 1990s was well over $6k in current inflation adjusted USD and had a 12 mhz CPU with a 800x600 (or lower, can't remember) 14" CRT screen, a dot matrix printer and two games. At $200 this computer is coming in at

I've not had a single major problem with Linux since adopting the following strategy: a) check whether your hardware is compatible before buying b) don't install a distro hot off the press. It should be obvious to anyone who's been using Li

But it really is a silly childish thing. They made up "courriel" just so they didn't have to use "email". But electronic is électroniques in French (and both ultimately come from the Greek) and the English word "mail" is derived from Old Fr

I can confirm the iPhone 3G jumped the gun by a long way. I got one of the early versions that had next to no reception. In the USA some people went into stores and got replacements. Outside the USA I got fobbed off on the support line and

I agree with the OP, I got a weird vibe off it. I suggest you just chuck a logo over the front bit. I.e. replace it with the logo on a background maybe with a still picture of you stamping down/appearing next to it when you say your name.

This is the key to the argument here. It seems Zed said "they won't respond to any complaint" and never filed one before he went to DDOS the account and inadvertently the whole site. Seems like poor form from all sides.

Flagged. James, this is appropriate for your blog but not for HN. Also, you have a massive logical error in that you fail to explore the idea that there are moral consequences from inaction.

The long term trend is quite extraordinary with regard to the total number going into higher ed (which form networks too, although not the same as the elite institutions). "Two percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 were enrolled in a universit

I think you know what I mean. If I'd just said the article was immature and silly and doesn't belong on HN because of its outrageous tone my feeling is that I'd be downvoted, as it's happened before, so I made my criticism more oblique.[1]
