As much as the cult of genius is often overwhelming and contributing people have been written out of histories of discovery I still feel uneasy when I see a Prof and a PhD student listed as discovering something as you never know what the P

Yeah this is just fires up my dual tone WWII era fan-boy siren.[1] This intimates Jobs somehow innovated massively in typography, when we see tons of logos experimenting with typography throughout the 20th century (and much further into the

Ah ok. My usage is business and development so I suppose the cpu matters much more to me, as do open source reliable drivers. I see the point for a fast GPU for entertainment usage, but going all the way down to a 1.4 gighz core 2 duo seems

It's not the best machine you can afford though for a lot of people. I have a X200 thinkpad at 12" which is 600 grams more than the 11" and 300 grams more than the 13". But it has a dual core i5 at 2.5 gigahertz which is a fair bit faster t

Which have been available for years I would add. I had a white plastic one (without the hole in the back) in 2006. Just saying, as with most things Apple, it's not a massive innovation.

More to the point, what's the cost of a Moon base - where a return and even a rescue is feasible - AND a one-way extensive robotic exploration of Mars. It just seems an overly dramatic waste (there will be no shortage of people willing to g

Over the past few months the O'Reilly ebook deal of the day at $10 (although they seem to be testing the water for selling at over $10 at the moment unfortunately) has lead to quite a few acquisitions on my part. Additionally you can regist

What I don't get is people complaining about the name "LibreOffice". "OpenOffice.org" including the .org, a web-related indication for a website, in the name of a desktop application has to be one of the single greatest trainwrecks in histo

1. I have a white plastic netbook too that cost almost half. I don't see any cracks in it. You are arguing that a $1000+ machine can have cracks in it after a month because it's not a "premium" product. That just sounds like the bleating of

For me it's the opposite, I had a white macbook and the casing cracked and the hdd failed (along with an iPhone with 3G that didn't work - powercord that frayed and headphones that died). The X200 on the other hand has a much higher quality

I don't read most of the 37 signals stuff, but it feels pretty cult-like for people to be paying $1000 for a one day "master class". I mean seriously, for the same cash you could get all of the following: a professional logo designed for

Who exactly stands behind Mono after Novell is sold (if and when)? Isn't there a significant risk, beyond the present one of MS making some move against them, that it will be left to stagnate by a new owner? And even the MS risk hasn't bee

10.10 doesn't provide much over 10.04 for a server, so people should wait maybe? I installed the 10.10 RC a little while ago on my primary machine but I am on 9.04, 9.10 and 10.04 on various other machines.
