I'm pretty sure going to the top of HN will sell a nice amount of copies. So while this might be an accurate account of what happened in the last few months and the suffering of the OP, it's also an effective, albeit obvious, mark

This. I specifically came here to write something very similar. Thank you. Call me a JVM fanboy, but when I see such comments, I tend to believe the author didn't want to spend time genuinely understanding the JVM and doing thorough te

Sad but true. I once had dreams of a career in academia and research. I'm a molecular biologist turned computer scientist turned software engineer in industry. I now have a very good salary, interesting challenges, plenty of work-life

Usually, institutions don't subscribe to everything a publisher has on offer, but rather a subset that is interesting for them. Therefore, if a download works with a set of credentials, it should not look suspicious. Storing the docume

In my understanding, some people have donated their academic login credentials, effectively giving Sci-hub access to their institution's subscriptions. When somebody requests an article, Sci-hub will try and see if it already has it. I

There were several factors: - This took place in Germany, where salaries don't vary to a very large extent. There are some outliers, but most people know they need to offer a certain amount of $$$ for talent. - I did my research and as

I have recently spent a long time (i.e. months) and an unholy amount of energy in an interview process that ended up offering a firm number (because of a ladder similar to the one at Google) that was significantly lower than what I was maki

I was dreading the big "BUT + <arbitrary rant>", and indeed, it never came. I share many of the views of the author. It's a great piece of software.

I would not equate scraping with periodic searching for a keyword. The problematic part is when you scrape data off of websites, and the owners don't want you to do it; as in, they would not even be happy if you manually copied that

That option would be useful indeed. I used to browse the community forums, propose features and vote on others. Spotify, however, has been pretty unresponsive to even the most reasonable and popular proposals, sadly, I might say.

Being a sucker for MOOCs, this is pretty exciting. The search algorithm doesn't seem to work right, though. Also, a bit more information would be nice, i.e. when the next offering starts, if it's paid or free, etc.

Being a few years into my programming career, I'd be really grateful for somebody to help/guide at a higher level than, say, learning language X or pattern Y. It's a bit tough to clearly define, but I think I don't know

I cannot wait to throw away the C++11/CUDA mess I am dealing with right now. However, this doesn't really seem ready for prime time, i.e. undocumented stuff that is "in flux". Going to keep an eye on this.
