There was much more "magic" in CGI/Perl. The only "magic" in JS in fact is caused by browser vendors and have nothing to do with language itself.

Biggest limitations of HTML5: - security causes a lot of limits for users and developers - unhealthy competition between browser vendors, example: WebGL@InternetExplorer - its limited to 3 languages: HTML, CSS, JS (and its derivatives)

Using javascript as a main language for large projects is bad idea, let alone node.js. In browser environment at least you can use debugger, while on server side using any of available js interpreters/compilers is a black box just like rail

I see no reason, why as an experienced Java developer you couldn't become javascript/ruby/python/scala/whatever expert. There is not that much to learn in Java.

do you really need schema for this? look at web server logs, they have no schema, each line is not related with others, yet we are able to analyze logs

I'm not sure about your point on schemas. When using relational database you must have your schema in two places: 1. database and 2. ORM - the second one is enough to avoid most of problems. What's the point of having schema in database the

you can put anything inside class attribute <div id="data" class="{json: 'x'}"/> you can mix actual classes with JSON, just put JSON at the end: <div class="header inline {json: 'x'}"/> CSS selectors will work just fine

You can't run Solr/Lucene properly on Google App Engine(just an example), other software may run better in such circumstances, but its quality is questionable

Solr works great for english language, but once you want to have other languages support, you will want to use Lucene directly. anyway, what if my hosting provider won't let me run Solr or any other java software?

When you can't have Apache Lucene, because you are using PHP/RoR/Django/node.js/whatever, you can always have "basic text indexing and search". that's a bad news for users of all those PHP/RoR/Django/node etc. apps, who will never get prope

I doubt this vehicle will be used for landing on Earth(why not use parachutes?). I would rather send it to Mars orbit and reuse it there as a landing module, but not take it back to Earth.
