Having seen the results of everyone being able to spin up a VM (or an EMR cluster, or an EKS cluster) I can say a little more bureaucracy is probably a good thing. You end up wasting huge amounts of money on resources that are just sitting

Nobody ever asks if these data centers are actually providing any value to society. There's just this assumption that ever growing compute capacity is a good thing. Then you get into this sort of induced demand situation where more com

In a way when people talk about encryption what they really mean is authorization to access data. The actual facts of whether or not data are encrypted using some whiz bang algorithm are irrelevant as long as some intermediary is ensuring t

Rather than doubling all income one option would be to make the existing income more evenly spread out. For instance McDonalds' CEO makes ~$20 million a year[0] and they paid out $6.6/share with 726M shares[1] to parasite sharehol

I wonder if this phenomenon happens in other industries as well. I can't imagine a road crew getting away with spending an extra year to build a road because they decided to use completely nonstandard equipment that doesn't work w

If you ever give this talk in the US you can mention the fact that apparently US farmers are unable to farm without GPS[0] Surely it's no problem that their food supply depends entirely on a finicky and easily jammed system of satellit

This seems a bit like nuance trolling[0] to me. The upshot of articles like this is essentially "so we should stick with the status quo" whether it says that outright or not. 0: https://citationsneeded.libsyn.com/e

I tend to agree but there’s a sort of induced demand effect with this kind of thing. Instead of producing the same amount but more efficiently it’s used as an excuse to produce and consume even more. The same happens with cloud computing. N

For similar reasons to those mentioned in the article it's possible the past century will be seen as a dark age by future humans. Computers are incredibly fragile and depend on complex systems (eg the electricity grid) to even operate.
