These companies experienced solid growth during covid (because everyone was home using tech) and now that's starting to recede. They predicted this growth would continue and hired for it. They are choosing to recede that. > replace

This is an excellent point. I'm with you - I still trust his advice if not for his judgement for the fact that the sample population of startups he's worked with is so high. But this bias is there. I'd wager if YC started HN

Trade magazines like these are actually good candidates for paywalls. Their small reader base is likely to get their employer to pay for it.

I have a friend who works at Sandia. I remember him saying the pay is lower and there is way more work life balance. There is less of a sink or swim attitude around perf there. I got the sense you can come in, do your thing, and be out by 4

I'm an alum of the community (though not of this specific grant). Unlike members of other communities I've been part of, most at SPC have quit their jobs and are all-in to whatever their goal is (research, side projects, or buildi

Very much an aside and downvote if too much of a tangent - if I wanted to create a command and conquer like game (ideally like generals where it is 3d) - how would I go about doing that? Is Godot an appropriate engine for that?

False. People can desire things that are non material eg beauty. That’s always been there - what new is the constant feed of information to us that we process and conclude as being inferior.

Boys fight physically. Fights would happen at my HS once-ish a month. The staff would break it up, detentions would be served, and life would go on. Now each fight is recorded and saved for life. The short term consequences of that are not

How would you describe your mental health? How would you describe, on aggregate, the mental health of your peers? If you could waive your magic wand to help your generation, what one thing would you ask for?

This is an excellent summary of the current state of affairs from the ground level. Do you see your peers growing out of social media? Or do you think it will be a permanent fixture in their lives?

I respect the heck out of that - it takes guts banning your kid’s friends. Curious - how did you carry this out? You told your child to stop inviting them or you asked the problematic kid’s parents?

It takes a massive amount of effort to stay at the top. Yes there’s inertia and lock-in and walled gardens that contribute to folks staying in the apple ecosystem. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

That's possible - video is definitely more enticing than photos and there's data out there to back that up among the general population. Perhaps people will get bored of videos one day - we'll see.
