Please, no more! It's still measuring different algorithms (memoizing, iterative) and measuring them in different ways (including/excluding startup costs). This says nothing, and does no one any good.

I can't tell from your post, but remember: this paper is from 1993. That we still today have Ruby vs Lisp posts with fib(n) as the test is pathetic. And as a Haskell guy, I'm going to call out anyone trying to use fibonacci to measure thing

Indeed, no other benchmark is: * so accessible to the naive -- anyone can understand fib! * has so many ways to implement it -- each in different complexity classes! * is so perfect for language pissing contests on the intertubes. Endless f

And no description of which compilers, which versions, which compiler flags, what architecture/OS. We have the shootout to answer these questions, and it doesn't include fibonacci.

Please, I don't want to see any more benchmarks using fibonacci. NO FIB!!

It may be infeasible to do all the effect analysis though. You have to reconstruct high level semantics. That's just not going to fly in general, though it will do well in some simple cases.

GHC uses a modified form of C-- internally, which is fed to LLVM, GCC or the native codegen. The C-- standalone compilers never reached the maturity of e.g. LLVM, to justify the port.

That's right. The GCC (-fvia-C) is being dropped in favor of LLVM. Work on the native codegen continues separately.

The title is accurate, as simultaneously, the GCC backend is being dropped. [1] 1. http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/glasgow-haskell-users/2010-...
