If I wanted to freelance, I can simply do that in the US and solve the work/life/vacation balance myself. I will be exploring freelancing in the near future. I might be too down the tech stack, since I will not find exactly what I

I would love to live and work in Italy (or any other Mediterranean climate country), but there are simply no [tech] jobs. And what few software jobs there are are not interesting at all and pay very little. I value my time and I am willing

Yahoo is simply the first company that we publicly know of that scans incoming emails. If the government can force Yahoo, they will force all of them. Yahoo has more disgruntled former employees to reveal secrets than Google, Microsoft, etc

You can no longer set up mail forwarding with Yahoo. When Yahoo released a ton of unused accounts, I grabbed my last name (which I use on every service). I occasionally get mail for that email address. My Yahoo email is several years older

How many B&W movies have made it to the public domain? Why are companies not streaming public domain movies? There are many classics available for free.

Sense requires Kibana, which is another app to download and run. The original version of Sense, which I still use, was a simple Chrome extension.

Out of curiosity, do you work remotely, locally or travel? I have considered consulting, but the local market outside of the Bay Area would be limiting.

I once was searching for a file locally (Windows) and my search ended up searching the shared drive of my company, which contained a zip file. Inside this zip file were excel spreadsheets containing the salaries of all employees (around 50

I was going to post the same thing. As far as I can tell, there are no term or document frequencies in postgres. Then again, I have seen several Lucene implementations with either or both are disabled. Can you even get an explain back from

I took a train from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Slow and decrepit. No first class even if you wanted to. However, they sold beer on board at prices that were cheaper than even a supermarket. We finished their entire supply. Opte

I was not worried about the mugger himself, but of any possible friends nearby. I could have floored him easily (martial arts), but I did not want to start a rumble.

Perhaps I should do a Ask HN, but are there any fellow geeks that would want to do the Mongol Rally in 2017/2018? Would love to do it, but none of my friend are that type of person (or cannot quit their job).

It could very well be. Americans (or better yet, foodies) tend to care about minute details regarding food. In Italy, you go to a cafe/bar and order wine. No wine list, just red or white. You order a blonde/red/dark beer. No

Does an espresso really need the crema? In Italy, espresso is simply called caffe. When you order coffee, you get an espresso. At home, many still use a caffettiera (sorry, do not know the word in English). A caffettiera will not produce an
