By that token, law is also trivia. The thing is, how successful do you think the internet is going to be? It has, within a few decades, permeated almost every aspect of our lives, and it seems set to get even bigger. An analogy in human his

URLs are much farther from everyday reality than objects like books I should point out that the reverse is true for many people these days, and will be true for many more in the future. The digital revolution is creating a new reality, me

The page doesn't look bad, but it's not super impressive either because it's obviously heavily inspired by facebook. Just to give some credit where it is due, the real genius here is the guy who wrote blueprint.css, without which the OP cou

This is quite excellent. The first concretely constructive post about the facebook login meme.

Well, Geocities used to be a behemoth only a company with mega resources like Yahoo could undertake. When it went down, a few individuals archived most of it [citation needed]. I'd imagine that if and when Facebook goes down, something alon

I decided grades were bullshit and rebelled in college because I failed a programming module while people who copied my lab work passed. Even worse was when people who copied my answers for a quiz got higher marks than me even though our an

OTOH, we now have programs routinely run in homes (e.g. games) that occasionally require computing power orders of magnitude higher than what was available ten years ago. I expect that if we have orders of magnitude more power deliverable t

You're right on both counts, and it is indeed a poor idea unless we can figure out a way to efficiently implement arbitrary precision arithmetic in hardware. I was just quibbling that the implementation of the binary search wasn't strictly

And yet, when we find another car in the lot in which we were almost positive we'd parked, we do not call the car manufacturers complaining that our car has spontaneously transformed, do we?

It's not a telepathic, shape-shifting alien, it's an omnipotent alien that created the universe and implies that there is no reality higher than this. Would that impact your faith? Assuming for the sake of argument that he's not lying, woul

I do not think that is possible for the human race without some serious brainwashing. Either that or look out for the school/office shooting types and make sure they get constantly laid, for the good of all humanity.

Well, you don't need to understand your code fully to effect changes in the simulation. The point is that it is a simulation, and you control the code. So you'd be omnipotent, just not omniscient. You know, that scenario would actually expl

I stopped reading when the author made a leap in logic from superhuman intelligence to omniscience, and then from omniscience to time travel just within the abstract. This was obviously not a well thought out piece.

Out of curiosity, what would your reaction be if you found that it wasn't fiction? Would you accept the entity the author was conversing with as God? Or would you think he was a demon? Or just an advanced godlike alien being beyond which an

The comparison to generators does not seem valid. Outsourcing your electrical needs is not the same as outsourcing your IT needs. I don't think many companies would (or should) outsource their data storage, for example.

While I agree that the article title was linkbait, I think the author had a valid point in noting that mentioning that the app was a finalist in a big competition does help in vouching for the app's usefulness. This isn't something that App
