I disagree with your beat down of Pandora. I find one of the most frustrating things about turntable.fm to be the lack of appropriateness of songs to their rooms genre (if we're going to compare it to Pandora). I can listen to a personalize

I would love it if people would share their real world experiences with either (or both) Puppet and Chef in dynamic environments that needed more than a few servers to be maintained. In particular, polyglot persistent environments that aren

Am I reading that correctly that you're sharding a database on the same box?

How is this related only to MongoDB?

Oh no doubt, and I think naming conventions is something that takes practice over time in this situation - too verbose leads to 'wasted' space, too little leads to making it near impossible for someone to view the database. Since indexes do

Percona builds should become the default install for MySQL (only half kidding).

If you are in a position to do so, I can't recommend enough using the Percona XtraBackup[1] tool to enable online snapshotting of MySQL. (Also, if you are able to upgrade to XtraDB I would highly recommend looking into it). A mysqldump / re

One particular part of that slide deck stuck out, and b/c there's no accompanying audio to go with it I thought I'd mention it. Towards the beginning of the deck in one slide he says 'MongoDB is fast.... until your data / indexes no longer

As far as I'm aware this would be no different when reimporting a dump from MySQL/Postgres. If you're not restoring from a snapshot then the indexes have to rebuild themselves.

I think you mean "Is it reasonable to be disappointed this doesn't support 10.4", in which case no, I don't think it's reasonable. 10.4 stopped being updated in Nov '07.

Indeed, once your app achieves a certain threshold then Memcached comes into play. Curious if you've looked into sharding as a way to help minimize the lock time needed? Per collection locking is coming soon as well https://jira.mongodb.or

While I'd never suggest Mongo if you need transactional support on par with OLTP, Mongo does have single document transactional support through the use of getLastError and its various options. http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/getLastErr

I think you're talking about a few different points here that aren't necessarily related. Persistence (which is available in MongoDB) has nothing to do with testing of a model (a single document inside a collection). Some actually see that

I'm going to go out on a short limb and guess that most users here don't understand who Vintank is or much about the wine industry in general. The group at Vintank are hardly 'middlemen wanting some biz dev money'. I've had the pleasure rec

Depending on the version of MySQL that you're upgrading from and if you're upgrading in place vs starting fresh on a new system you won't be able to use Xtrabackup to handle the mysql.proc table due to backwards incompatibilities. I had an

Yeah, keyword arguments/named parameters. The most common way that we get to implement (hack) it now is by using an associative array, which then hides parameters in the implementation of the method as opposed to exposing it in the interfa

I would give up hope for the ability to have a short syntax for arrays (or lots of other syntactical pleasantries) if the core team would please finally implement named arguments.

It's actually quite easy to spin up multiple servers from a pre-existing Rackspace image via the API. The initial POST to create the server returns the password, which your script could either capture, or you could send a PUT command to the
