Yes, it also saddens me. The majority of young customers was spoiled by Apple's bad decision to not offer trial versions in the AppStore, as was established practice since decades.

SourceKit is unbelievable! When using Xcode for most of the time (as in >50%) it causes very high CPU load and it's not uncommon for it to use >3GB of RAM.

Stackoverflow is the prime example for how a company can generate tremenduous value without making that much money. It's difficult to estimate its contribution to the world economy quantitatively, but I'd definitely say billions,

That's a great point. I see it in effect in my life in several indirect ways. Some people I might want to hang out with (because I find them interesting) give me the impression that I'm below their status level. I'm conscious

Sounds interesting. Does this introduce any latency for the UI? I can't stand using anything besides a terminal in normal VMs like virtualbox.

Apple inverted the previous Christmas-like feeling of "we have something new for each of you" to a "we've removed something you personally liked" that seems to cover many of us. I haven't commented yet at all s

No. I had the Dell XPS 15 9550 and there were several issues. • Trackpad much worse than on a Mac • Coil whine • Bad fan control means it was sometimes noisy in near-idle contitions (though in idle it was very silent) • there were some flic

I can seccond that. Had an XPS 15 whichs sports an etched-glass trackpad that still sucks so much I barely used it.

Thanks! The various components of tire noise are interesting. One other thing that came to my mind is that tire noise is usually concetrated in the high frequencies, whereas some cars, especially trucks, emit very low-frequency noises. The

I challenge this opinion. If you have any ressources to back your claim, please share! My estimates for the velocity where tire noise will be substantially louder than the rest of the car are much higher, more like 60km/h.

With headlines like these I sometimes wonder if it's just a PR piece to make nation X seem progressive (if you think of a nation as a brand). Reality is that Germany is very conservative and the car industry is too strong in influencin

If I would pray I'd pray for Elon. He's been such a source of inspiration to me. He's so brave in carrying his burden. May the fruits of his work prosper soon. Then he can take a break.

My Hackintosh opened my eyes. It made me realize how sad it is that Apple doesn't offer sensible Mac Pros anymore. Even most tech people think in terms like "do you NEED it?" and "a laptop should do it", etc., when

I agree and also use ESC a lot, but I can highly recommend mapping Caps-Lock to Ctrl. Some of the time I use Ctrl-[ then.

This!!! I simply can't understand why the folks at Apple don't get this. But then again it seems to be all about the looks now. When I first heard a recent rMBP under load, I was shocked and embarrased how loud it is. I mean, I wo

Electric scooters are almost completely silent (at 40km/h). So I'd say there's a lot of potential for lower noise tires. I guess at the moment there's just no optimization towards low noise profile. And I assume it'

I couldn't agree more! An OS is so much more than just the bash shell. There are countless annoyances on Windows that constantly get in the way. Some flaws you have to witness to actually believe. As an example, I'd go as far as s

I'd be curious to know what happens in a mixed-DPI setup, e.g. internal 4K screen and external 1080p screen.

Most likely you can fix the trackpad click quite easily yourself. There are some annoying 3-wing screws holding the battery but besides that there isn't much in the way. There's one single screw that sets the trackpad's click

Exactly. As an example: when using OpenCL, both the IGPU and the discrete GPU will show up as compute devices. Currently if an application uses the GPU at all, it would often pick the one it considers the most powerful. But even today you c

This Forbes article about the cultural influence is an interesting read! I wasn't aware of how investments into mining are that agnostic of the underlying technology.
