Not entirely sure I'd agree. The article doesn't mention that anyone actually observes it. I suspect the conversation is something along the lines of... Programmer: "It's Programmer's Day today!" Boss: "Shut up and work." Programmer: T_T On

Care to explain? I've clearly missed something as I have no idea what you're talking about. We host with Rackspace at work and have no issue with cron jobs...

I think the GitHub folks were misunderstanding me. I'm not saying that "rarrgh! github really is stupid for not being foss!" I'm not even leaning in that direction. I totally understand the business model. The only concern I have is not be

The only thing that could make github more awesome in my eyes would be if it was open source. While a lot of work has gone into gitorious, it seems like they are just playing catchup to some extent with github.

24 will have ELPA as the canonical package manager, iirc. So in a way, we do have the package system.

I've used it in the past. I didn't find it to be especially useful myself. Mostly what I wanted was the smart completion for PHP. I've played with if for C++ and it was pretty nice, but given that I never write C++ not useful for me persona

"...integrated easily with legacy email systems from the beginning to allow a seamless transition..." Nail on the head. That is exactly why I didn't use wave more than a handful of times even though I rather like it. If I'm the only person

Could anyone from bit.ly comment on if this is really enough to keep them in the black? I'm not entirely convinced there would be enough demand. I'm not entirely qualified to comment though either so...

Best thing about org files is they are just plain text so they work perfectly for this.

Thanks, You've gotten me to try the pomodoro technique. We'll see how it goes. Probably write my own timer inside emacs though to fit my workflow better.

Funny, that's the thing that made me reach for readability. I don't like that style of design when people put huge titles for their blogs at the top leaving me momentarily confused as to what I'm looking at, only to realize the content actu

This is one of the things I love about HN. Someone makes a flippant comment and I get to learn something interesting cause someone else posts a response like it was a serious statement. I find myself correcting people's flippant comments of

If that is so then what is with all the urinating Calvin stickers? Every time I see one I feel like my childhood is being wizzed on.

This reminds me strongly of a John Muir quote I've recently been finding to be very true. "Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessit

I like some of the ideas here, but I think my current browser, Conkeror (not to be confused with Konqueror), has already solved this problem. Similar to the way that Quicksilver for OS X works, I just type at it the buffer (tab) I want and

That only works if your window manager actually manages your windows instead of just drawing them. StumpWM is a great example of what I'd call, doing it right. Plus it's hackable in CL so that's a plus. :-)

I prefer to read from books but the information in most programming books is out of date very fast. For this reason, I prefer learning languages from the web.
