To be more specific, compression schemes decode predictably, but any given portion of the compression stream need not be independently predictable. Gzip (and DEFLATE in general) use adaptive compression approaches - the data determines the

How would systems running on petrol be carbon-neutral? Granted, you reduce one form of carbon emissions by presuming a clean form of energy and petrol generation. Use of the petrol, however, should still result in carbon emissions. Have

Eugene O'Kelly told an example of this story in "Chasing Daylight": flying from NY to Australia, to fly next to the head of a bank whose account he was trying to win but was unable to schedule a call to talk to. But that was mostly possible

I think the title is more clever than the article. Traditionally, a mirage is a false vision of safety in a dangerous place. If the idea of Mojito Island drives you to keep going in a hostile environment: great. I don't see the suggestio

Interesting -- a GNU Free Documentation alternative book on starting perl for practisioners. However, the page looks stale. The PDF is (c) 2003, so unless this is a recent re-release under the GNU Free Documentation License, we may not see

I argue correlation/causation all the time -- but this is really a semantics argument on both our parts. The statement was "There's nothing in this graph that suggests market share is being taken away." I suppose the emphasis could be pla

I think this accounting discussion at the per-employee metric is getting out of hand. We're facing a very real apples-and-oranges conversation on expense when comparing Oracle (software) versus Amazon (retail). The margin -- and revenue -

Lux Delux exists for both PC and iphone (Lux DLX). The PC version is multiplayer, networked, variable AIs, user generated maps. I think most of that's true for Lux DLX. You have to pay for it, but it is worth it if you're a risk player.
