I'm somewhat surprised that Windows is still most of personal computers. In my eyes, it's fundamentally inferior to Linux, and its superficial superiority only comes from the ecosystem, which is to say adoption, not some inherent

I've often thought that similar trust systems would work well in social media, web search, etc., but I've never seen it implemented in a meaningful way. I wonder what I'm missing.

Honestly, I never thought about reasoning this way, but it's kind of obvious now that someone did it. Very interesting.

To be fair, I do anthropomorphize LLMs. But, I also anthropomorphize, say, a kitchen knife that I accidentally scrape on something (I think "sorry, knife"). I don't reflect on this much; it's just a pleasant way to relat

I guess in part I commented not on what you said, but on seeing people be abusive when an LLM doesn't follow instructions or fails to fulfill some expectation. I think I had some pent up feelings about that. > having a dry tone and

I choose to talk in a respectful way, because that's how I want to communicate: it's not because I'm afraid of retaliation or burning bridges. It's because I am caring and conscious. If I think that something doesn'

Tangential: I've found that having an LLM recreate the full file, with changes appllied, is less mistake-prone, than producing a patch. I wonder if anyone else came to this conclusion too.

Some counter-arguments: - We already trust computers to run our markets, banks, cars, energy infrastructure, etc. Is a computer popularly untrustworthy? - Do low-tech physical ballot systems offer good guarantees? See 2024 Russian elections

An acquaintance had his phone taken away at a US airport by a border guard (or whatever you call them) for inspection. The guard went through his messaging apps, read chats. I understand the necessity for occasional physical searches for co

Used thinkpads and dell latitudes, battery and brightness aren't always what I'd like though. Frameworks and similar sound nice, but can't bring myself to pay the premium. What features matter to you?

Last time I was shopping for a laptop, I needed battery life, low glare, high screen brightness, rugedness was a plus. Cheapness is a good proxy for rugedness. Being able to upgrade/repair components is generally something I value high

Experience? Lying to yourself only seems to make things worse? It can be agonizing, and you rob yourself of agency. I'm surprised this is not self-evident. How do you see projections affecting people long-term?

An emotionally charged rant (what other kind is there?) is a projection. It can be good when you're overwhelmed and need to get through a crisis, but it's bad long term. That's how I see it, at least.

Is this a mental health advice request or an invitation to rant? Serious question. We can do one of these, but not both, I think.
