My guess, from the houses I went into, is their construction. I have to emphasize these are not houses like any first-world person would think of, as soon as you leave the big city there is very little that is modern about China - they're

I am sure cars contribute, but I believe the majority comes from factories outside of the city and from homes, which primarily burn coal to keep warm. Beijing is downwind from a lot of that.

I was in Beijing for Chinese New Year for a couple weeks in 2009, and when I flew in, I couldn't see the enormous city at all from the sky. It was completely hidden in a cloud of smog. There was some of the worst air quality of the year at

No worries, I think we have a UX problem where it isn't clear what is original content and what are resources we are linking off to. I'll work on that

Just to clarify, the link goes to an original article written by me - not copy/pasted quotes from the resources listed. I have curated the links, added commentary and opinion and presented them as a blog post. The only difference is that

This is a really annoying scam, and sadly I have had several companies coming to me asking if we'd ever done their event at Twilio (we never did) and if it was a good idea. Stuff like this can be a huge time suck for founders, and if they

A CEO's job is not to avoid conflict. In fact, I think it is probably quite the opposite. The startups that avoid conflict are usually full of yes men and they usually end up dead, from my experience. Writing this post was probably 10x m

Maybe you didn't read the actual post, but it consists of original content - I created my own hand selected list of Seattle companies to watch. I included links to other articles as sources but they don't contain the same content. Affilia

I think I understand the problem. I'm curious, do you think it would have helped if I had some subheaders similar to how blog posts get broken up, and some blocks of editorial text? Also, maybe the link titles being so large is confusing?

HN is one of several traffic sources we are using to build an audience for Referly. The company is evolving really quickly to be much more than a tool for small-time affiliates. It's becoming a blogging platform/magazine/paid content site

I agree, it is easy to spend way too much time on a post - as a rule I spend no more than 3 hours on a post, and I kind of embrace mediocrity. At some point (often way before hitting the full 3 hours), the value of publishing and starting
