Unfortunately powerpc will probably be removed from sid/unstable just like sparc recently was. The binaries are generated by extensive architecture that is a lot of work to maintain and needs enthusiastic developers to keep everything

I have a bad habit where instead of doing something relevant I play with old stuff I read about but didn't have access to as a kid. VMS always interested me since I first read about it in the jargon file. I recently found an alphaserve

It's cool to hear work is being done on a formal memory model. The model described by the current spec basically says "TODO it's going to be weak".

There are lots of inexpensive ip cameras on the market. I use several to watch my animals from work. There's a specification called ONVIF that most of them more-or-less implement that allows applications to discover cameras features li

Are you saying that most SSDs lose data they claimed was saved to stable storage in the event of power loss? That's crazy. Filesystems are greatly complicated by the need to be resistant to power loss. What is the point of all that com

If you're doing this in assembly, no problem so long as you understand the memory model of the cpu architecture you're targeting. The memory model implemented by c compilers absolutely do not allow this. The problem is not cache c

People tend to conflate the concept of text based interfaces with terminals and curses but it's possible to have text interfaces without curses. Most plan 9 applications have text interfaces but do not use terminals.
