This. But also, the point here IMO isn't just about performance but about tooling choices. There's so much tendency in the dev community (and has been since 1996 when I started doing web stuff) to jump on the latest thing without

Literally noone I know is on Telegram or Signal. Literally everyone is on WhatsApp. Pretty much noone I know cares about privacy, and they're all on Facebook anyway. It's gonna be really hard giving it up :-/

This may be an unpopular opinion on HN, but I just don't get it. The whole notion of setting personal goals, working out tasks and sub tasks and strategies and charts - like, you deal with all that stuff in your work life. Give it a re

A solid mindfulness practice. Being able to take a step back - even if only a bit at first - and see that we are all quite often over-reacting, or responding in ways that are inbuilt / learnt - is a really good starting point IMO. I&#x

I think there's still a fairly dangerous element of colonialism which will get phased out as that whole era drops from memory. Here's hoping, anyway.

Agree. I'd always argue that this was broadly an anti austerity / inequality vote: people just basically pissed off with having a rubbish life voting against some notion of "authority" or "centralisation". The

Agree. I personally think Labour blew it, big time. But: the lies that got us out of the EU were pretty unstoppable. Selling an out message on the back of sensationalist, shock messages was an easy PR hit. We'll see. Personally, I'

Yay. Now we're free. Oh wait, no, it's just that absolutely everything got harder, more expensive, more nationalistic, more pathetic and sad. It's all incredibly depressing. Here's hoping our kids manage to vote us back

Ok, how about: I have no idea what this is, what it does or how to use it. The UX and words tell me nothing. The layout is confusing. A paragraph which outlines a high level vision: "we're building an experiment in how to do X wit

Here's a little story: I run a tiny digital agency. Our clients are all non technical. They all want maps of some form. Until Google did their infamous pricing thing, all was well: we could set up as many nice embedded maps on websites

Sam Harris, episode #227, “Knowing the mind”. A really solid walkthrough of meditative practice, the science behind it, and more https://pca.st/episode/e838d883-1fc5-41a1-8f54-83af8475990d

Lovely piece. I'm struck by how many of the comments revolve entirely around career choices. I wonder if that's a us bias or a world bias or just a HN bias. Career can be consuming but it's only a facet of life's choices

I think there's a reductionist angle to your point which just doesn't chime with me. It's a bit like people arguing for anti-natalism. It's interesting, but morally redundant, somehow? The hangup for me isn't the ce
