If you’re looking for a fresh roguelike rabbit hole, check out Cogmind. It’s PC only but takes RL in an interesting new direction. (Not affiliated with it other than begin somewhat addicted.)

That is super cool. At the time -- I was like 12 -- all those horizontal and vertical blank hacks on the Atari 800 seemed like total black magic to me. I had no idea you could even hook the VBLANK or HBLANK interrupt on PS1. Wow.

That is me, yes -- thank you! Actually the password save capability was mandated by Sony. At that time they wouldn't approve your game if you didn't offer a card-less save mode. I guess they thought requiring people to have memo

What a great video. Beyond the slick presentation with all the cool animations, it really captures what Andy's like as a person. Amazing talent of course, but also an almost perverse joy in doing things you're not supposed to be a

Absolutely right! While we did suggest that applicants try to solve one of these in whatever language they liked, the main purpose was to attract curious and smart people. And it worked! These puzzles brought us a ton of great candidates al

You might be interested in Our Mathematical Universe by Max Tegmark. He tries to argue that, fundamentally, the universe is "just math." In other words (glossing over enormous complexity here) if the basic axioms of math are tru

Phishing is frankly an embarrassment for the mainstream security community. The temptation is to "blame the stupid users" -- but the truth is that even a script kiddie can take a real email from a mainstream brand, "Save As H

You mentioned there are NUCs that have AVX-512, which surprised me. Those looking for such a NUC: search for NUCs with the Core i3-8121U CPU. This is a cheap AVX-512 entry point if you want to experiment. (~$400 for the NUC).

It's many miles farther -- but I then don't get stuck at the airport for two hours Friday night. Also, DCA is great when you're inside while IAD is the usual huge-airport security nightmare.

I've definitely experienced this at DCA, and it's worth nothing as well that it sometimes take hours to get out of the airport due to the insane traffic jams right around the terminals and in the parking garages. DCA has gone fr

Fun fact: Carl actually implemented the Turing machine construction on slide 28 as a proof of concept and used it to do simple arithmetic (very very slowly) -- you can read the details towards the end of the talk, with screenshots.

If you look at the letter from Thomas M. Saunders, Esq. towards the middle of the page, you'll notice a handwritten reference to Skip Paul. This is the same Skip Paul who championed our game, 13 years later, while a senior executive at

Not really. The GOOL code was used for character logic and things like the load/save screen. The majority of the code was written in C and MIPS assembly.

Yes, you're absolutely right: 2FA makes things harder for the attacker but doesn't really solve the problem. But in practice, at least circa 2018, most phishing sites are very primitive. Attackers do OK victimizing people without

Like phishing awareness training, this is a good practice. We actually offer URL rewriting to our customers, but there are some UX downsides to it so not everyone wants it. One big issue with GSB, Phishtank, OpenPhish, etc. as "the sol

We don't do this kind of thing, but some companies do offer "take-down" and related services. Not sure if credential-DDoS is one of them though. :)

2FA would also help, but people don't want to mandate it. And even if you require 2FA for your own employees, the third party "pay this invoice" request may not be gated on 2FA -- because that's up to the third party to

This comes up on HN periodically. Here are few points to keep in mind: - In 1994, when Andy started on GOOL, the tools around C/C++ were far more limited. Basically all we had was GCC; there wasn't even a decent debugger in the be

As alluded to in the stack overflow comments, Carl de Marcken (ITA Chief Scientist) wrote some code to determine the longest possible shortest path between two airports with scheduled flights. At that time (circa 2000) the answer was Wasu,
