Hey Brett! Nice post. I had a BLAST mentoring at PennApps - these kids could teach everybody a lot about enthusiasm and hard work. It's always inspiring when you have so many great minds in one place. Look for my post about it as well, comi

Have you tried it? I had the same opinion for a while, but after I wrote some code, I found the translated code easy to understand - and the language itself helpful and consistent.

I'm mostly dismissing you because of the annoying title and subtitle of your blog.

I see the gimmick culture stuff as more of a way for employees to brag about where they are. It's harder to explain to somebody without a software background why the company culture where you work is great when you can just say "Oh, and we

Same story as the Lisp folks. Good ideas need to be wrapped up in easy-to-understand, small packages for them to be picked up by the more mainstream languages.

Great stuff. Bought myself a copy after reading that you're strongly influenced by SICP - good enough for me :) Edit: Forgot to mention, I spent a weekend writing a bunch of similar music manipulation tools in clojure if anybody is interest

I wrote the same program in Clojure somewhat recently. Boggle seems to be a popular problem. https://github.com/dmansen/boggle

If there were jokes formed around the nonsensical behavior of these languages, then it might be funny. But I don't find it very entertaining to just point them out.

Great points. I would also contrast the Black Flag with Ian MacKaye's body of work: start off with fast and simple (Minor Threat), but move on when it becomes trite (Embrace, then Fugazi). Fugazi created some of the most interesting, comple

I do this at home, but my items are geared towards musicmaking. Every guitarist knows picks always go missing - buy hundreds and leave them around the house. Same goes for instrument cables: why should you EVER have to deal with running out

Great talk, thanks for the link. The power of emacs isn't immediately obvious, until you try to use it for something it wasn't explicitly designed for.
