I love R. Once you get it, there is something beautiful about its functional approach. I like using either tidyverse or data.table with pipes, split, map, reduce. The code looks like layers of a filter that data flows through.

A related point is that you can confidently invest in vim knowing that it will be around for a good deal longer. I often find it pointless getting too invested with a shiny bit of proprietary software because I don't know how long I&#

I'm afraid this is out of my scope of understanding. Once the immune system determines something is non-self, the immune system can often self-propagate the response. It eventually enters a tolerance phase where it aims to just '

Yes, it's really fascinating stuff. Just to add to that, cells must present a continuous sample of their proteasome on the cell surface in the form of a short peptide 9-12 amino acids long. T cells will recognise when the cell is pro

Here's a link to the article [0]. Just a bit of background - 95% of humans will experience infection with EBV at some point in their lives. Once you're infected, it remains latent, only flaring up in particular circumstances. MS

You are right despite what other HNers think. MS is first and foremost an auto-immune disease. It is not that surprising that infections that provoke a large immune response can trigger an autoimmune condition. When we understand the imm

I wouldn't say MS is contagious. It is an autoimmune disease, but EBV is a putative risk factor. The paper notes that people are diagnosed with MS 5-10 years after the EBV initial infection, so would not be contagious from either an

I'm not familiar with the literature, but I did read the paper. They looked at military personnel who have had samples taken and saved, and were able to 'go back in time' to look their EBV status at enrolment and later on.

I'm glad my naive self learnt this more than 20 years ago when it was apparently normal to apply DRM to ripped CDs on windows. I vaguely remembered that it would allow you to copy it up to three times, but I don't remember the de

It's interesting because I remember all the early discussions against generics in Go centred around "what Real World scenario do you need it for?" An argument against generics was that people found it hard to find examples th

Yes. I have a similar mindset and reasoning for using Mate desktop. It's very simple, I'm spared the complexity of kde and the eye candy / novel paradigm of gnome.

The irrationality displayed on my daily commute made me so excited for self-driving cars - it's a shame we're further away from that than I realised. Yes, I alternate between a motorcycle and largish SUV to get to work. I had a h

I've had a recent fascination with the NCAP tests, and a lot of people aren't aware that they change almost yearly. I saw this [1] recent video recently looking at some of the worst crash tests, and it really drills home that good

Have to be careful of incidence data over time. A lot has changed in the way we define diseases, as well as how we investigate them, from the point at which you see a general practitioner to whether you would get an endoscopy, to how the d

Weird, I pay taxes to fund the NHS, and I get a great deal here in the UK compared to the US. From my perspective your medical system squanders money on inefficiency and lining pockets, while you pay more and get refused treatment more.
