newsrob is the best thing ever. I read on public transit where I have typically 3G -- but all of the content is already local. That means that even when I pass through the black hole of Sunnyvale, I can read without interruption. I also h

Regarding function pointer arrays, I'm doing something in labrea ( http://github.com/dustin/labrea ) where I need to make what is effectively an FFI call from C to C where I know the number of arguments, and their types, but I have them in

It's kind of an anti-pattern, but I've found this to actually enhance clarity in a few places: int moved = (is_reading ? read : write)(fd, buf, len);

It's useful in that it lets you know that there's a conversation going on somewhere else when you're looking at the comments on the page. It might be enough to say, ``active conversation as of x [unit of time] ago over here: [link]''

VMs running on my box might not get a lot of CPU time, but will still get good IO performance. It's going a bit beyond just simple performance, too. For example, I can add logging of reads on client network file descriptors like this: htt

I certainly do test on many different systems, but not all of them. This doesn't take the place of real-world testing. It takes the place of setting up a network and putting a modem between my client and server then attaching a tape drive

Sure, but then I have to carry around another computer or two when I want to work within a particular assumption. Now, I can say, ``What if this box were really slow to respond to network requests 10% of the time?'' and just do it.

I definitely had plenty of complaints (there's no way in the language to detect when a process exits, for example -- though you can at least build one yourself). I don't think LtU approval is necessary to have done something good. We need

If you're good, you can get a job in a matter of days. There's plenty of hiring out here all the time. We can't hire good programmers fast enough. I moved out here over ten years ago with pretty much no place to live and a small contracti

Why can't we model it like a real book? Even if they limit it to owner -> borrower -> owner, it'd be great to just not have time limits. A market will be created in any case.

This is mostly a java disease, though it affects a few other languages. In python, you wouldn't design this because you can change the implementation of the class without having to go and rewrite all the callers.

I do as well. I can take SMS on my own time, in my browser, and answer thoughtfully when I feel like it. The advocates of a "quick call" are really quite selfish. It may be quick for you , but it really sucks for me when I'm in a meeting
