That one's a bit tough since it really only affects people who are working far apart -- at which point you can just agree on what time something is. For example, it's great to think of noon as being the middle of the day no matter where you

I bet you can. But can likely use emacs as well. I think if I had to pick one piece of software to live with on my desert island, it'd be emacs (assuming I had a reasonable boot loader and a filesystem to sit under it).

It took me years to consider using vim over plain vi. After fifteen years or so of vi I ended up switching to emacs. I've worked with really awesome people who are completely lost without [insert proprietary single-platform editor here].

SystemTap is not competition for dtrace. If you've ever been on a system that had dtrace, you'd find that pretty much everything works. He's going through the same exercise I went through recently where your customer is running your softwa

If you haven't decided, it's a great way to try it out. I'm an opscode customer, but before that, I was playing around with their free plan.

The biggest annoyance is what it doesn't even look like it will do. I can't (meaningfully) sync my docs between my mac and my iPad. That's one of the main reasons I wanted to upgrade.

It's significantly smaller when I do it on my machine with an optimizer. Interestingly, g++ compiles it to the exact same code if you remove all the crap that isn't the main with the cout printing a literal string.

Let me load the specially constructed set of parameters specific to this image so that when I do the next step you get a really clear image. That was a little too hand-wavy. I'm a little dubious until I see what went into that phase.

systemtap adds a ton of complexity over dtrace. You can do more with it, but the really simple things that have large benefits are no longer really simple (which causes them to lose some of their benefit). I've burned a lot of time trying

I wish people would compare these with IO operations instead of wall time. SSD is a huge win there, and that matters the most for a lot of people.

Go existed in various forms for a very long time. I was learning alef in the mid-nineties. When go came out, it was pretty easy to recognize. That was a great explanation, though.
