Into institutionalised slavery. Sadly slavery still exists, is live and well, and occurs throughout the planet (even rich countries). The difference is that it is not statutory now in most places.

Nice text! I’m just surprised at the lack of mention of the techniques used in the Gotthard in the 19th century.

I read it like so too. I don’t typically respond to emails immediately unless I have my email application open (which I rarely do as I do enjoy time to do deep work). But in the lead up to a big event there is no way I would go radio silent

Do you know if the same occurs in iPhones? That was always my assumption, but seeing a Mac-only response makes me wonder if it is addressing a Mac/only question or if it’s applicable only to Macs.

I disagree with one conceptual point; if you are truly Bayesian you don’t “choose” a prior, by definition you “already have” a prior that you are updating with data to get to a posterior.

I’m not an expert in BNNs but the prior does not need to be justified in terms of each parameter. Bayesian analysis frequently uses hyperparameters to set the overall tightness or looseness of the parameters (a la Minnesota priors in the ec

Exciting! For me would be a nice complement or competition to, say, Komoot. Constructive feedback: at least on safari, it was not as smooth to navigate as other map apps, and also a bit cumbersome to add waypoints, etc. A small but importan

Reading all pandas vs polars reminded me of the tidyverse vs data.table discussion some 10 years ago.

Exactly the single reason why I use pandas when I need to use python. But coming from R, it still feels like “second best”.

Hi François, just wanted to take the opportunity to tell you how much your work has been important for me. Both at the start, getting into deep learning (both keras and the book) and now with keras3 as I'm working to spread DL techniqu

Excellent piece. My observation in less technically-oriented but still innovative companies: shipping also occurs when you post about it on LinkedIn and can show with a concrete example (a graph or a small video)

Excellent point. And it doesn’t need to be much. If a person is really minimalistic, even a single piece of good-taste furniture would suffice.

It's really interesting to have so many fossils close to the surface, especially in an area with a considerable amount of seismic activity. I always thought earthquakes & the such would serve to disperse fossils rather than pool so

Does it count all of the chromium based apps that query some webpage behind the scenes? Because other than a few brave exceptions, my impression is that most apps are nowadays glorified (and bloated) websites.

Thanks for this! By the way, does anyone know anyone of the icon designers of Windows 3, 3.1? I would be very happy to meet them or know more about them. For some reason I'm still fascinated with those icons even after all those years.

Judging by this thread, surely a part of OpenAI’s business model is to release models with somewhat grey-area outlandish claims, then sit and wait for people to test it out paying top dollars for tokens.
