I’m really glad to see this as the top comment: I think your analysis is spot on. Anecdotally I’ve been reading a lot of old news (60s-90s) and it’s amazing to read as a retrospective. It has given me context for how we arrived to present d

Taxes are corrupt. I profited from a publicly funded project in CA and the abuses were atrocious. You should minimize your tax burden as much as possible.

Capitalism will sort it out. There are perverse incentives for violations of privacy in almost all consumer verticals. When the surveillance stops being profitable we will be free.

How do you think permanence of modern communication enhances chilling effects? I agree the prior penalty could be more severe but now everything is logged and the barrier to offend is low, IMO.

Sure I understand but I don’t think that aligns with the spirit of the comment I replied to. I read it as FOMO.

We are already on our way to full blown censorship. Cancel culture et al is effectively the beginning of the same outcome. Censorship starts with chilling effects

As someone who is from the west every time I mention the potential depravity of China it’s met with denial or question - even sometimes here.

I feel a little good every time Slack has an issue - it has brought social media communications to my otherwise social media free (excluding hn) life.

I want the shock and negative feelings. People need to get their head out of the sand and realize the true cost of your new iPhone 12 and all the other cheap Chinese junk. We shouldn’t be supporting China, we should bring skilled work back
