I'd just go ahead and renew it. Gaddafi is not going to wage a significant part of his war with your $25 and the US Govt is not likely to send the black helicopters after you over it either. This isn't something worth worrying about.

FYI, it looks like Anonymous is aiming for total humiliation as far as HBG is concerned - they have even set up a pretty web interface/search for the entire collection of stolen emails - see http://hbgary.anonleaks.ru/

I'm a subscriber to this and I find it very useful as I go through frequent periods of staying off the net for a week or so and so not visiting HN directly. Just thought I'd post a message to say "keep up the good work" to kale and "try it

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Parents, government, and everybody in between seem focused on pushing as many young people into university education as possible. But it seems to me that we have pushed them too hard if they are cheating o

Your comment got me thinking about how the rules of this game should perhaps be refined a little to make it more effective. If the object of the game is to learn how to feel comfortable being rejected by people then perhaps it's better to

I used Mockingbird a while ago (& loved it) but since then I had forgotten all about it. I got the email notification about these upgrades this morning and it was poorly written. You might want to re-visit the text and look it over. I'v

the vast majority of unemployed people will not "find work". they will be "given work" by other people who are in a position to take advantage of them I think you're basically right; it's already happening on a large scale with lower skil

Thanks for the reply. I asked about what you are using because I have recently tried doing some drawing with a Wacom graphics tablet and am having trouble (I have one of the cheap ones where you draw on the tablet whilst watching the screen

That video just made my day - awesome! Can't wait to get the book. I also realised when browsing the Amazon page that the author is the same guy who wrote 'casting spels' ( http://www.lisperati.com/casting.html ) which was also great. If yo

I've never been to SV but watching through these video's gives me a sense of the sheer intensity of the energy that seems to be there with so many companies and founders focused in one place. It's intoxicating; I'm so jealous! Thanks to all

A few comments about your list: AdFreeZone - There is (or was) money in this. Slashdot at one point allowed you to pay $5 to remove ads (still might for all I know). I think Kuro5hin.org did something similar. I don't know how this is sti

Job postings are a great window into a company. They show you just how much clear thinking is demanded along with how well people communicate. That line stuck out for me. Writing is window into the minds of the people you might hire as we

I might just be a hippy dippy technology wonk but I have a gut belief that most societal change results from technological development. If country A wanted country B to do X then it's ability to make it happen through violence will be limit

You don't get it. What Gibson is saying is that, (1) The rate of development of new technology is speeding up and that, therefore, (2) Humans experience an increasing amount of change in their lifetimes. So, in a way, the future is getting

I worked through the LFS book in 2002/03. Can't say I learn't much - the book is (well, was - it might be different now) written as a HOWTO without much explanation of how and why everything works. The basic process as I remember it was to

Here are a few of my handy tips to help you decide whether you should go ahead and buy that new X: (1) Think about cost in terms of the work you had to do to buy it, not just the sale price. You are (most often) buying X with post-tax incom

The same way you fix the problem of now knowing how to code, not knowing brain surgery, not knowing how to drive a car - buy some books and study. I'm not trying to be sarcastic, just to point out the strangeness of it all. Most people woul

In the UK there have been attempts to do this in schools. I haven't really followed it so I don't know on what scale but it is happening. The main problem with teaching financial literacy is that you have to be literate yourself in order to

You have a point. I guess you can make a case that CT is an indirect wealth tax though it certaintly isn't intended to be. And of course the property value isn't re-evaluated on an ongoing basis so appreciation isn't reflected in the tax yo

Thanks for the clarification (you too gyardley!). I'm in the UK and we don't do that here. We pay 'stamp duty' when buying a house and capital gains tax when selling (or not as there are exemptions) but nothing on an ongoing basis for the a
