Really enjoyed reading the comments. Seems like few people see programming language features as basis vectors of the solution vector space. The more features you add the more cognitively complicated the search for the solution in this space

Adding logos to QR codes, changing colors or replacing squares with circles in QR code is a CS sophomore weekend project at best. It's really fun and quite easy to do. You don't even need to understand Reed-Solomon codes for that.

There are hundreds of similar QR code builders, mostly for web (like this one, despite being labeled "cross-platform"). All equally crappy, as they try to monetize such a simple and widespread encoding to the unaware audience. So

Yes, this thing runs purely on extrinsing motivation – rewards mainly. As soon as you stop getting rewards for these (or competitive programming), you drop out of it pretty quickly. Intrinsic motivation ("I'm doing something becau

Remembering all the cases I needed to export to CSV – 99% are the relatively small datasets, so marginal gains in a few millisecond to import aren't worth sacrificing convenience. And sometimes you just get data from gazzilion of diver

Shooters are less energy demanding though. Even a bit disappointingly so. I even used to put gym hand weights so my muscles get more work to do while playing (also helps with stabilizing the gun, as I don't have gunstock). Contractors

I'm not a gamer, but I found shooter games in VR to be extremely cool for procrastination. I can play Contractors for hours. Last winter I had limited opportunities to excercise, so I tried FitXR and it turned out to be insanely engagi

I don't use Pro version and never had a need for. Notes is clumsy – I never can find what I want there. With folders, pinned notes, named notes, synced/unsynced etc, it's just a mess. Drafts is just a super-reliable and fast

You'll like Drafts app. Open the app and start typing. Only then decide what you gonna do with the text. It's a native macOS app, so it starts instantly. I use it for everything – from writing articles to comments/messages, w

I attempted to do this [1] and explored topic of why VPL are not a mainstream too, but postponed project for maturation of VR/AR ecosystem as I see them usable only in VR now. This year actually I think to return to work on it. [1] Ret

Not trying to nitpick here, but '2' is not an int here. It's the constant evaluated at compile time. But yeah, valid case if users of your code are in the habit of typing magic numbers into your function that expects enum. My

It's actually the coolest thing about Go enums, that they just it – enums. Developers with a background in other languages assume all enums' use cases need string representation. Well, no. They are needed sometimes, but not always

I always wanted to write an app that will find flights for every solar eclipse (and suggest the seat, of course), but it never got enough priority in my backlog. Glad to see airlines already implementing this idea to some extent!

Interesting. I see two different aspects here: 1) Mental model. My claim comes from the firm belief that the more code is aligned with how we think, the easier it is to reason about the code. I naturally think about actions as they are not

It might also come from the common sense of using the CSP model (goroutines and messages, basically). Being asynchronous or synchronous is not the property of the function; it's the caller's decision. So every function is "sy

Some people joke that state management in Flutter is like http mixers/routes in Go. But I think it's much worse :) Granted, UI state handling is not an easy task, and it's not directly related to the topic of complexity of th

Sure, it's always a tradeoff. Yet my pet peeve is that people rarely talk about the social aspects of the programming language. It's called "language" for a reason. We express our thoughts using this language ("I in

I've been writing Go for 9+ years, but for the last 4 years, I had to write a lot of Dart (for Flutter). I consider these two languages to be on the opposite sides of the complexity stance. Dart tries to add and implement every feature

I have an opposite experience. Making performant JavaScript app require years of learning hacks of web ecosystem. Which is unsurprising, given that web apps build on the foundation layer not suited for performant UI apps. Flutter apps are p
