Yeah, whenever I hear this kind of rhetoric - if my company ever required <some minor annoyance> it's time for a new job - I roll my eyes. Sure, keep pushing yourself out of more companies, there are a lot of good engineers* who

That's one of my favorite scenes. He is so angry drunk and it's his birthday and you can tell he doesn't like the chef at all (the chef is the same guy who took them out "fishing" earlier in the day).

Prestigious universities get a lot of negative attention for precisely this, at least in some circles. MBAs used to be a no brainer, but the return on their investment has plummeted and much of the value that is retained by the few that ret

I have been using Safeway delivery for some time now. It's much cheaper than Instacart, there's no tip pressure, the delivery people are real Safeway employees, and there's no third party sucking up value. It's so much n

I swear every 2 years tptacek has a new company with some obscure name. I guess fly isn't that obscure, maybe he's turning over a new leaf.

Presumably you're citing percentage of desktop usage, because about half of the web is viewed on mobile. I know many people who primarily use phones or tablets, with very occasional if any laptop access.

WSL is a nice to have gnu inside of windows, but one of the reasons I switched to linux was because I enjoyed setting up a window manager and configuring my status bar, writing custom scripts for keybindings, general fiddling. There are dis

Everyone jokes about it finally being "the year of the linux desktop", but a few years ago that actually did happen to my circle. Between a mac for work and linux at home, I actually haven't touched windows in a number of yea

There are other solutions than what you're describing. I've been in a number of bars with unsexed bathrooms, where the sinks are all in the open and there are private secure individual stalls. I don't know that this is the be

In my class (2016), there were still lots of people who felt silly about the web, which is where most of the work actually is. I would guess about half of my graduating computer science classmates went on to not work in the industry, becaus

It is still very tough to outsource software development. Because of the nature of these sort of contractual arrangements, you end up moving the challenge from the implementation to the design spec and acceptance criteria. In a more traditi
