I've got a couple old laptops from 2007/2011 era - are you talking about KDE Plasma or a different DE? I'm down to try just about whatever you recommend.

Even as a different perspective to that - a lot of what AWS/GCP/Azure are doing today, IBM was doing in the 80's with Cobol and DB2 and a bunch of tech that people today are just not interested in. There's a post that I

As I've gotten more experience in tech, I came up with a saying - "Everything great was created in the '80s, and we've been rediscovering those things every ten years since." I'm not firm on "the '80s

You're right, they're not. But if the league they play in says that their pads have to change, and the goalies are staring down a $200 investment in pads (this isn't totally unreasonable) there could be a lot of folks who can

My personal preference is the JPL raw feed (here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPrbJ63qUc4 ) but I think that more people watching space here is better! Great link!

If a player leaves your game, lichess gives like a 20 second timer and then lets you claim victory. I believe there are also "offer draw" options, but I'm not sure.

I use git pull pretty frequently. I like to keep my main branch up to date with the main branch of the remote repo. I find it's helpful to have that consistency across contexts. I think diffs are faster if it's to the local repo v

As a service to the community, there's probably a redirect extension for whatever browser you're using that can be configured to take you directly to the "old Reddit" look-and-feel. For FireFox, I use Redirector and the

After a cursory read of the article, I'm not sure the title is doing the article any favors here. From my read, it sounds like a. This is about comet orbitals of the solar system b. There appear to be _at least two_ planes of comet orb

Nit-pick - that probably wasn't the PE exam. It was probably the FE exam. The FE exam is what you need to pass in order to start the apprenticeship to get your PE. The PE exam is what you take after an apprenticeship in order to get yo

I mean, you're not entirely wrong. But also, since this is client side code, a smaller download means smaller utilities on client machines. Which is nice.

This is a binary with ~1800 LoC including comments and generous whitespace. Probably 16-1700 Executable SLoC. Mostly some API handling, file reading, and user input requests. I'm running the following go version: go version go1.14.4 da

I tried to answer upthread ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23912394 ), but the long and short of it is that it takes about 3x longer to start the program for my example (35 MB no compression, 27 MB after ldflags="

I don't think UPX triggers (my) virus scanner. The McAfee daemon on my work laptop barfs at the EICAR Test File ( https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB5974... ) but it ignores the UPX binary r

That's an interesting point. I hadn't tested the startup times of the upx binary before, so I just did by running `time $binary_name --help`. For my binary, this should print a simple help message and quit. Big: 0.04s user 0.01s s

Completely agree. I performed the steps in the article and reduced the output binary size from ~35 MB for raw go build to around 29 MB for go build with the ldflags all the way down to 8.3 MB for compressed with upx. Really impressive resul

How often do we do this for our customers? Honestly, if a customer wanted to know that much detail about my process, I would be quite bothered, and I suspect most people would be as well. Wait for the recap, everything will become clear the

It would require discipline, but you could only read HN in incognito/private mode. Delete your history for a fresh start. I do this on my phone - it's not as helpful as I thought it would be.
