A little older than you (prolly couple of years). I remember how when I was a teen and coding a lot inside the Turbo C IDE, it became second nature to press F2 frequently (to save). Around that time, while working on math homework (on paper

Did anyone else notice the favicon (shown on one's browser tab) for this link? IMO it beautifully depicts the subject of this post. I did a double-take before realizing that it was an awl :)

As someone with experience teaching younger people (middle school students) programming, I have also seen this three-way split, though it may not be an even one. 1. Learners who will succeed, regardless of the amount and nature of instructi

It is surprising how much discomfort a badly-chosen font can create. Also, their ads currently look rather intrusive. I wish them well in this "off the beaten path" endeavor. Maybe they'll try out other fonts and better ad pl

Thank you for this link. Thanks GP also, for pointing out the irony that an article discussing our digital society's deep dependence on advertising is itself hosted on a space that has to rely on advertising to stay afloat (and thereby

That's very well articulated. He had no pretense and never came across as patronizing, at least in my (admittedly limited) sampling of old episodes via YouTube. The "take others for exactly who they are" mentality captures hi

Ahhh, Zen of Graphic Programming was my one of first graphics books, which led straight to Foley, vanDam, et. al., and I was hooked :) It's safe to say Abrash's book had a big impact on me. Norton's books also make me nostalg

Thank you for sharing this! Having watched the first lecture, I was thoroughly impressed by the design and presentation of this historical artifact, with (judiciously chosen) modern embellishments.

This is a beautiful distinction (one that I'm aware of), but which appears to have been lost today. Consequently, these terms are now used interchangeably, leading many people to conflate these two processes. However, this distinction

I'd like to chime in and add that I've had to rebuild an entire Visual Programming Language (think Scratch, but free of text) to migrate away from Flash. I picked Haxe, and it has been a solid language+compiler for what I needed (

Same here. It's a "better Javascript" for me as well. My constraints force me to use JS for what I'm building, and Haxe does a great job of insulating me from having to write and maintain a large codebase in JS.

Check out the projects listed at the Center for Game Science. Two of them (DragonArchitect and BlockStudio) are all about introducing programming concepts to novices. Disclosure: I'm a grad student at CGS.
