Type hints and/or stronger typing in other languages are not good substitutes for testing. I sometimes worry that teams with strong preferences for strong typing have a false sense of security.

I don't know about billion dollar ideas, but I encourage you to make a product even if something similar exists. If you squint enough there is nothing new under the sun and chances are that you will take a very long time to find someth

Thanks. I found that very informative! I also now have the dreadful notion of debugging a non-deterministic deadlock or race condition in a workflow that takes a week to run!

I had a minor scare some time ago with npm. Can't remember the exact details, something like I had a broken symlink in my homedir and nodemon printed an error about the symlink! My first thought was it's a supply chain attack look

I also liked it! Since it's based on a research data set, I'm sure someone has written some "normal f###ing prose" about it somewhere on the web. A search for "Candor corpus" yields some results, although none

Interesting to think that the answer to banning thinking computers in Dune was basically to indoctrinate kids from birth (mentats) and/or doing large quantities of drugs (guild navigators).

I love having deep conversations with fellow passengers while driving long distances. I've never felt like it distracted me while driving. I'd be curious to see any research to the contrary. My hunch is that the moment some form o

Might be true, idk? For all we know that professor now gives a 2.5-day take home assignments where they are allowed to use LLMs, and then assess them in an 1 hour oral exam where they need to explain approach, results and how they ensure th

I had a like minded professor in university, ironically in AI. Our big tests were all 3 day take home assignments. The questions were open ended, required writing code, processing data and analyzing results. I think the problem with this is

I can attest to the follow-on traffic. I had a showHN on the front page for a brief moment. A few weeks later it was featured in a popular Chinese newsletter. There's also been a few smaller spikes that is attributable to HN.

That sounds like my preferred setup! I use a static site deployed to cloudfront backed by a Django app on Digital Ocean :) It might not work for all applications, but it tends to hold up great against traffic spikes and the hosting costs st

Nice visualization! 2 suggestions if I can nitpick :) 1. Make the grid render as a square when rows == columns 2. Default to the largest number of rows and columns that would still avoid page scrolling

I like the idea! You would still need something to serve the HTML file, but that isn't so bad. But in my experience the potential audience shrinks significantly once anything git related is expected from a user.

I see VC money as an artificial force propping up a project. It is not bad per se, but VC money is not a constant and it leaves a big drop at the end. If there is a big enough community that has grown around the project, that drop might be

If you have an agent (person or LLM model) building software for you, you place a very high level of trust in that agent. Building trust is a process - you start with some trust and over time increase or decrease your level of trust. In gen
